"Here we show that adaptive induction of three prime exonuclease 1 (TREX1) restrains STING-dependent nucleic acid sensing in cancer cells via its catalytic function in degrading cytosolic DNA. Cancer cell TREX1 expression is coordinately induced with STING by autocrine IFN and downstream STAT1, preventing signal amplification. TREX1 inactivation in cancer cells thus unleashes STING-IFN signaling, recruiting T and NK (natural killer) cells, sensitizing to NK cell derived IFNγ, and co-operating with PD-1 blockade in multiple mouse tumor models to enhance immunogenicity."

If you're in Berlin:

"The show, “Josephine Baker: Icon in Motion,” which runs through April 28, is a small but dense and deeply imaginative reconsidering of her life and work. The museum’s director, Klaus Biesenbach (formerly of MoMA and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art) has curated the show with the artist Kandis Williams, the scholar Terri Francis and the curator Mona Horncastle: The result emphasizes the importance of multiple interpretations."

'Embora bom e barato seja um objetivo apelativo, não é realista querermos investigação científica de qualidade e, ao mesmo tempo, não investirmos de forma consequente nesse desígnio. Seguramente que os recursos destinados ao SNCT têm necessariamente de ser adequados à realidade do país, mas se este investimento for demasiado curto, imprevisível e mal estruturado dificilmente pode originar os retornos que queremos.'

'The technology may transform agriculture in LMICs beyond the genomic level: local farmers seem happy, Runo told the journal Nature, to source seeds from regional researchers rather than multinationals. The global spread of gene-editing technology may end up dispersing the commercial power currently concentrated in corporate labs — and raises the prospect of African-grown gene-edited crops being sold beyond the continent.'

People should be aware that "stingless bees" doesn't mean these are nice bees.

Stingless bees don't sting, that's true. They just crawl up your nose and into your ears and bite until you no longer function like a normal human being.

If you see me running at great speed through the Amazon forest, it's usually because I'm trying to get away from the stingless bees.

"Stingless bees are native to the Amazon, unlike the more familiar but invasive honey bees from Africa and Europe that have spread through the Americas. The most obvious difference, perhaps, is that stingless bees don’t sting. Their honey, which is runny enough to be drunk like a liquid and is said to have a citrusy aftertaste, is used by many Indigenous Peruvians as a natural medicine." nytimes.com/2024/01/30/science

This is big news:

"Word came this morning that Biogen is dropping their anti-amyloid antibody (Aduhelm, aducanumab), so it's time to take stock. I was never happy about the FDA's decision to approve it, and that's putting it lightly."

Musk makes big claims with little detail, and announcing on Twitter that Neuralink implanted a brain-computer interface into a person “is maybe the biggest example of that.” Here's what we do & don't know, from actual BCI experts scientificamerican.com/article

“The purveyors of #disinformation capitalize on this illusion of intellectual autonomy. Individuals who believe that they can rely solely on their own wits are vulnerable to the use of misleading, cherry-picked evidence. They are susceptible to plausible but ill-informed arguments. Such tactics have entered a recurring playbook for spreading scientific disinformation” fediscience.org/@ct_bergstrom/

Big welcome (back) to @bevil!

While he won't throw it in your face, know that Bevil is a super-star brain researcher AND an artist AND he doesn't just wear those two hats - he works at the intersection. For instance, here's a picture of Bevil and Alan Alda celebrating color:

On the first, he has opinions! ... Especially about how to make science a better an more equitable place. No doubt he'll find a home here; I highly recommended this follow.

I can’t believe I’m having to write this but please don’t let Elon Musk anywhere near your brain.

Polar bears are iconic symbols of climate change. Who hasn't seen the near-cliche image of a bear standing on a tiny ice floe?

These animals' ambassadorial status and powerful emotional resonance attract cherry-picking hair-splitting climate change deniers in droves. Our first debunking of this drivel was published in 2009.

Freshly revised for the 4th time, this time with our "at a glance" treatment. How does it work for you? Let us know!
