"We generated mice for the B cell–conditional expression of the most frequent BTG1 mutation [Gln36→His (Q36H)]. Btg1Q36H cells almost completely outcompeted their wild-type counterparts, specifically in the GC. This competitive fitness manifested as a stronger induction of MYC-dependent growth programs."

"This nightmare illness doesn’t yet exist. But for inspiration, Napper needs to look only at the very real contagion in his own lab: chronic wasting disease (CWD), a highly lethal, highly contagious #NeurodegenerativeDisease that is devastating North America’s deer, elk, and other cervids."

"Driverless cars are often called autonomous vehicles – but driving isn’t an autonomous activity. It’s a co-operative social activity, in which part of the job of whoever’s behind the wheel is to communicate with others on the road."

"Given their obvious academic and innovation contributions to US academia and economy, one would expect that foreign-born researchers would be welcomed with open arms. In practice, however, they continue to face significant barriers to enter and participate in the US research enterprise. The most commonly discussed obstacles are the various forms of visa barriers faced by immigrant researchers, which have also been leveraged as a form of control of researchers in already vulnerable and precarious positions"

"Novartis’ anti-TIM-3 antibody has flunked a phase 3 blood cancer trial, prompting the Swiss drugmaker to pull the drug candidate from its pipeline. The failed study was the biggest test to date of an immuno-oncology target into which a who’s who of leading drug developers have pumped money."

We are excited to share our latest preprint, where we investigated the interindividual variability of DNA methylation in whole blood. Work led by Olivia Grant. Great collaboration with Prof Leo Schalkwyk & Prof Meena Kumari. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.01.29.577703v1 1/n
Some of these genetic variants are far from the site displaying epigenetic variation, but we found that they still occupy the same TAD (regions of the DNA that interacts with itself in 3D space more than expected by chance) 6/n

Russian chemist and inventor Dmitri Mendeleev died #OTD in 1907.
He is best known for formulating the Periodic Law and creating a version of the periodic table of elements. He used the Periodic Law not only to correct the then-accepted properties of some known elements, such as the valence & atomic weight of uranium, but also to predict the properties of three elements that were yet to be discovered (germanium, gallium and scandium). via @wikipedia
Really lovely how #censorship has been thriving in German institutions these last few months. Countless academics, writers and artists who have expressed solidarity with Palestine or dared to criticise Israel have had their contracts and engagements cancelled.
I hope one day there will be some realisation that this was deeply, deeply the wrong moral high horse to sit on.
"In 2022, there were 941 reported cases of measles in the World Health Organization’s European region. Over just the first 10 months of last year, according to an alarming bulletin the W.H.O. issued in mid-December, there were more than 30,000."
