'The feverish pace of deforestation of the Bolsonaro years has slowed, dropping by 33.6 percent during the first six months after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva—known to all as Lula—was inaugurated president for his third term in 2023. But less has changed than those of us rooting for the survival of planet Earth might like: the local dynamics, the destructive ways of making money from the rainforest, the permissiveness and lawlessness have remained the same.'

Important discovery related to LongCovid: Fragments of SARS-CoV-2 virus can reassemble into "zombie" complexes (XenoAMP-dsDNA) and induce a major and sustained immune response, affecting healthy, uninfected cells, not seen with common cold coronaviruses

Not great, but moving in the right direction:

"Esta foi a primeira vez em vários meses que a curva começou a inverter, registando-se um aumento (de 37% para 42%) dos inquiridos que defendem que Portugal deve acolher mais pessoas de fora da Europa. Paralelamente, foi também a primeira vez desde maio que a percentagem de inquiridos que se mostra anti-imigração desceu, passando de 61% para 55%."

@cyrilpedia
Not even work visas. To my shock horror and my PhD student's despair, we found out at the beginning of January this year, the queue for a conference appointment based visa at the USA embassy in London is so long, his appointment is a week later than the conference starting (early May)....how is this just! #lablife #inequality and there is nothing we can do but give up

@cyrilpedia There was also a big #Measles outbreak in West Africa right after the Ebola epidemic, exactly as the late Dr Hans Rosling had predicted in 2014. In that case, children missed their vaccinations because the schools were closed.

I'm not sure how much COVID pandemic school closings affected measles vaccination in Europe and North America, but it's a good reminder that #PublicHealth is about balancing everything, not optimising the response for one thing.

"In 2022, there were 941 reported cases of measles in the World Health Organization’s European region. Over just the first 10 months of last year, according to an alarming bulletin the W.H.O. issued in mid-December, there were more than 30,000."

"The most interesting debate about leadership, then, is between those (like Machiavelli) who believe that leaders make (and overcome) history, and those (like Marx, and like the author of King David’s story) who believe that history makes (and constrains) leaders."

"Overall, these data demonstrate that IL-15C treatment, via its induction of IL-10 from NK cells, modulates the dysregulated inflammation during Plasmodium infection to promote Tfh differentiation & Ab generation, correlating with improved survival from reinfection."

For the first time, astronomers have direct evidence of planets that survived the death of their star.

These remarkable JWST images appear to show Jupiter-like planets still clinging to burned-out white dwarf stars. Our solar system might look a lot like this in 8 billion years.

"Fanon wrote at the height of the Cold War, but, with no less prescience, he regarded the East-West struggle as a passing sideshow, of far less consequence than the divisions between North and South, of the rich world and the poor world. If the colonial world was, in his words, “a world cut in two,” our postcolonial world seems scarcely less so. Just consider the starkly different responses to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza — or South Africa’s case against Israel, on the charge of genocide — in the global north and the global south."

"For these reasons, we hypothesize that PTMs could have been selected throughout evolution at the flanks of aggregation-prone regions as an intrinsic factor to protect proteins against aggregation, thus expanding the current repertoire of aggregation gatekeepers."

"When an immune cell encounters an Xist molecule, it also finds a huge number of proteins stuck to it. This unusual experience may confuse immune cells, which then mistakenly start making antibodies to the Xist proteins."

'Extreme weather events due to climate change are increasingly affecting production: some water reservoirs in southern Spain stand at only 4% capacity, while wildfires wiped out about 20% of Greek annual farm revenue last year.'
