"There are difficult decisions ahead on tax and spending. But some cuts, such as shrinking investment in research and development, would prove a tragically misguided false economy — and show that the UK had failed to learn from mistakes that have hampered us in the past."

We're hiring lecturers! Come and join us in the School of Biosciences @ScienceShef@twitter.com. We'd particularly love to see some applications from microbiologists with an interest in AMR but the posts are open to the full range of research interests in the School
A new blue fluorescent protein 'Surime' is reported in this paper: "Extension of the short wavelength side of fluorescent proteins using hydrated chromophores, and its application"

We also have a presence in the Fediverse at Mastodon: @epigenetics_pod. If you are there please give us a follow.
There is also an epigenetics Group to connect: @epigenetics
I am a Glyco-Scientist and I study carbohydrate-mediated host-pathogens interactions (#glycotime). Most of these interactions (structurally and immunologically) are extremely important to design vaccines.
I work at the Italian National Research Council as research assistant professor. I am an associate researcher at Finlay Institute in Cuba and I have been involved in the design and development of different Public vaccines (#Soberana). I am also affiliated to the Amsterdam UMC.

Hi everyone! I'm Ludo, a neurobiologist and, soon to be (Jan 2023), research group leader at the Department of Ophthalmology at the inselspital (@inselgruppe) and @unibern in #Switzerland.
I use #electrophysiology and #omics to investigate how #light impacts us and how the disruption the light signal because of #aging, #neurodegeneration, or modern lifestyle affects behavior and #mental health.
Posting mostly about #retina, #ipRGCs, #circadian rhythms, and #sleep.
#Immunology #CancerImmunity #Immunotherapy
"The presence of intratumoral tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS) is associated with positive clinical outcomes and responses to immunotherapy in cancer. Here, we used spatial transcriptomics to examine the nature of B cell responses within TLS in renal cell carcinoma (RCC)."

If you download your Twitter archive it arrives wrapped as a static HTML page, which is not very useful for doing anything with, and worse: it requires the original account to be still active to do useful things like enlarge the images since they use t.co links.
So here's a Python script to convert a Twitter archive to markdown or other formats: https://github.com/timhutton/twitter-archive-parser
Now you can archive your tweets in any way you want.

It's time for an #introduction to #ScienceMastodon.
I work mostly with extracellular #RNA, trying to make sense of its biology and to explore their potential as disease #biomarkers.
Part of our lab's work is about release and uptake of #ExtracellularVesicles and vesicular RNAs. But main interest is on nonvesicular #exRNA. How structure relates to stability, abundance and function? What's their role in #immunity? We use #microscopy, #sequencing, but mostly enjoy doing old-fashion #biochemistry
For neuroscientists attending #sfn22: don’t miss the poster by Mitya Chklovskii’s group describing the completion status of the whole brain #connectome of the fairy wasp #Megaphragma, of expected completion early in 2022. Find the poster tomorrow Monday morning, number 328.16 / YY35.
Mitya kindly shared the poster image publicly elsewhere.
This tiny #wasp is famous for being the size of a large paramecium (a unicellular organism) and for enucleating the vast majority of its central neurons while pupating. The adult has less that 10,000 neurons in its central brain yet it isn’t missing any organ or body part. See the paper that jumpstarted this effort:
Polilov AA. The smallest insects evolve anucleate neurons. Arthropod structure & development. 2012 Jan 1;41(1):29-34. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1467803911000946
Guess I should post an actual #introduction; just switched here from the social server. I'm an ID #epidemiologist with expertise in #antibiotic resistance, molecular #epidemiology, #zoonoses, #scicomm, #vaccine hesitancy, #zombies, dabbles in #histofmed and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Hate hashtags so unfortunate that's how everything gets searched here. Born and bred Midwesterner with a short jaunt to the east coast. Took up running during the pandemic so occasional #rundouchery.
Hello! I’m a molecular microbiologist interested in bacterial motility, protein export, and science education.

"In both the case of SARS-CoV-2 and EBOV, a rush to judgment obscured the facts and led researchers and policymakers to make errant claims that wasted time and resources. Discerning the origins of COVID-19 is an important mission. It must be a mission that’s approached with care—false leads not only unfairly place blame on ethical research and researchers but also fail to advance public health so that we’re better prepared for the next pandemic. The following careful telling of events early on in the pandemic elucidates the facts—and the distortions."
A role for the STING pathway in nervous system regeneration.
"Here, we found that protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 2 (Ptpn2) inhibition combined with low-dose IFNγ enhances CNS axon regeneration by amplifying IFNγ-STAT1 signaling, with the cGAS-STING pathway as the functional downstream signaling. In the PNS, the IFNγ-cGAS-STING axis is coordinated by both neuronal and non-neuronal cells to support spontaneous axon regeneration."

So, trying to figure out where all the epidemiologists are. I see them here and there on this site, but there is nothing like #epitwitter yet. If you see an epidemiologist wandering around Mastodon, send them my way!

The Microbiology Society is hosting an online event on Fri 18 Nov (LGBTQ+ STEM Day).
The event will include an online discussion with openly LGBTQ+ scientists representing different career stages, both in academia and the biotech industry. Topics of discussion include the challenges that LGBTQ+ researchers face in their careers, and how they overcome these obstacles through community-building and learning from leaders in the field.

My #introduction!
I am a professor at Arizona State University. I have a lab, and we study the #evolution, structure, and function of #microbes that form beneficial long-term infections in eukaryotic cells. Mostly this means #bacteria that infect sap-feeding #insects, but we also run into #fungi every once in a while. We use #cellbiology, #genomics, and #biochemistry in our work.
I loved learning about new science on the bird app but hated the negativity. I hope this can be different.
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
