"Although the importance of cTECs in T cell development is well defined, mechanisms that shape the cTEC compartment and regulate its functional specialization are unclear. Using a Cxcl12DsRed reporter mouse model, we show that changes in Cxcl12 expression reveal a developmentally regulated program of cTEC heterogeneity."

Forgot to do an #introduction in my excitement to be here.
Right now I have a few work hats: as a Senior Advisor to the Director of NHGRI, I lead projects needed by the institute, and this year that's establishing #evaluation of our grants and programs.
As an Associate Investigator, I lead the Engagement Methods Unit (EMU), my small lab focused on #genetic literacy (paper out soon!), #autism #genetics and #genomics, highlighting #ableism, and measuring effectiveness of #scicomm.
👋🏻 y'all!

The latest episode of the #EMBOPodcast is out today.
I spoke with Roberto di Lauro who's had a fascinating career at the NCI during the golden age of molecular biology there, in Naples - both at Federico II & running one of biology's mythical places, the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, and even served some time in the diplomatic core.
This was a fun talk about science, #SciencePolicy, #HistoryOfScience, #MolecularBiology, science in Italy and much more.

New here, so time for #introductions. All my early training was in biophysics/biochemistry, but for postdoc I switched it up and started studying the ubiquitous #parasite Toxoplasma gondii. My lab at Univ. of TX Southwestern combines everything from genetics to cell biology to structural biology and biochemistry to figure out how the parasite ticks. Another #twitterMigration, @reeselab1 over there. Excited to move to a community-based FOSS alternative!
"The controlled expression of one cellular feature -- the cilium -- was likely critical during early animal evolution. Two key transcription factors, RFX and FoxJ1, coordinate ciliogenesis in animals but are absent from the genomes of most other ciliated eukaryotes, raising the question of how the transcriptional regulation of ciliogenesis has evolved."
Hey! My name is Kat and I am an #epidemiologist from University of Illinois Chicago, School of Public Health #UIC. When I am not working/teaching, I make videos about #epidemiology for laypeople and post them on #tiktok and #instagram. My interests are: #infectiousdisease, #misinformation #sciencecommunication and #cancer . I’m also a big nerd 🤓, so I like programming / data / biostats and research methods. I have two cats 😸😸, I roller skate 🛼, and own 5 vintage #vespa scooters 🛵 @epiverse
“On the one hand, we were told to relax the overly strict Covid prevention rules. On the other hand, we could still get fired for not stamping out cases on time,” said a community official in Zhengding, a county under Shijiazhuang. “Our policy goals conflict with each other.”

"By 2014, when the B.J.P. first won national elections, driven in no small part by its innovative use of social media to tap into middle-class discontent with the status quo, Indian Twitter was well on its way to becoming one of the world’s most vitriolic online spaces, filled with ad hominem attacks and incitements to violence. And having used social media so adroitly to win power, the new government realized that controlling platforms like Twitter would be crucial to suppressing dissent.
Into this stew steps Elon Musk."

It's fantastic to connect with a lot of new people on #Mastodon, and so I think it's a great opportunity to highlight the #dataViz #protocols that I've been working on. The purpose of this resource is to lower the barrier for people in life sciences to start using R/ggplot2 for #dataViz.

"The deepest power is that of determining what people consider normal. If you can persuade others that your way of doing things is normal, you have won. At the moment, many mature democracies are experiencing the normalisation of the anti-liberal far right. It’s vital to keep insisting that their norms are no part of an acceptable normality."

"In the hippocampus, the activation of microglia was associated with inhibited neurogenesis, which could explain impaired memory formation in patients. The activation of microglia appeared to be mediated by persistently elevated levels of a molecule called C-C motif chemokine 11 (CCL11). CCL11 has been associated with aging and with inhibition of neurogenesis."

In 2007 Ljubljana's mayor moved to make the city center car-free.
Since then:
- Driving share of city trips ⬇️ from 58% to 39%
- Walking share of trips ⬆️ from 19% to 35%
- Air pollution ⬇️ 70%
Now 97% of residents want city center to remain car-free
