One of my favorite photos I've taken with this setup. There are a few different areas in the city where you can what feels like the entire city in profile. The cyclist riding by while a train full of people passes overhead, and the towering offices and condos of Streeterville look on-- it feels like a portrait of the city in profile.

"In the vinegar fly , flies chronically exposed to a high concentration of a monomolecular odor exhibit reduced behavioral aversion to the familiar odor when it is re-encountered. This change in olfactory behavior has been attributed to selective decreases in the sensitivity of second-order olfactory projection neurons (PNs) in the antennal lobe that respond to the overrepresented odor. However, since odorant compounds do not occur at similarly high concentrations in natural sources, the role of odor experience-dependent plasticity in natural environments is unclear."

In terms of #introductions, I'm an avid tech writer at work and often found writing blog posts and reading about music, data analysis, metadata, machine learning, data ethics, borders on the web, accessibility, inclusivity, and more.

I'm a big fan of cultivating community so I stay aware of local politics + housing/transit/bike/pedestrian advocacy here in SF as well 🙃

"The surge has caught officials and companies off guard. One chief executive of a large nursing home in the capital said the government had asked large state-owned enterprises, including China Resources and Sinopharm, to increase production of fever medication after sick Beijingers emptied pharmacy shelves."

"According to the art historian Charles Colbert, the usual practice of painters in this period ‘was to let the horizon fade into visual and conceptual insignificance’. But in Homer the horizon does not recede; it pitches forward, towards our world."

#introduction.

I'm a chemistry professor at UC Irvine that specializes in inorganic chem and electrochem.

My research focuses on #electrification of the chemical industry, #decarbonization, #carboncapture, and #sustainability. Current projects on electrochemical carbon capture and utilization, but also electric fields in #catalysis and #bioinsipred systems.

I'm an #academicmom that loves cooking, running, cycling, hiking, ultimate frisbee, and ice hockey but never has enough time.

Mastodon please help me with something. I'm a #trans guy with practically no trans guy friends. I know nothing about trans guys. I only know about James.

I could really do with some transmasc and trans men friends so.... hi?

Boosts encouraged 💜

Want to work on Mastodon full time? I’d like to pay a Rails dev for the next 3+ months to implement some auth improvements that matter to me but also just burn down bugs, make perf improvements, whatever is needed as this place grows. Remote 100% ok but need 3-4 hrs of Pacific time zone overlap, fair pay, meaningful work. #fedihire #ruby #rails #job

The long experiment to reduce #education costs by transferring tasks to #TeachingAssistants is clearly coming apart as more & more TAs in the #CostOfLivingCrises give up jobs they love, as they can be paid more at a #supermarket, leaving special needs pupils marooned, the remaining #teachers more over stretched & schools facing a #workforce challenge they do not have the budgets to solve.

Yet another case of treating staff as a cost that needs to be reduced, not a resource to be invested in!

#Drosophila #Advent Day18: #Hirtodrosophila trivittata is another fungus feeder, but this is a very distinctive looking fly and seems to be a specialist on fresh oyster #mushrooms (#Pleurotus) and similar species jstor.org/stable/2408009, where they can gather in spectacularly large numbers. This species was only added to the UK list in 2008 dipterists.org.uk/sites/defaul and I saw it for the first time in 2020 #Diptera #Fungi

On Dengue virus non-structural protein NS1:

"Using an in vitro model of trogocytosis we observed that both IgG and IgA isotype antibodies can facilitate facilitating monocytic uptake of DENV NS1 expressing plasma membrane in an additive fashion. This process was dependent on the expression of FcγRI (CD64) and FcαR (CD89) for IgG and IgA mediated membrane uptake, respectively. Furthermore, this process was antagonized by the presence of soluble NS1, suggesting that the production of soluble NS1 by infected cells may serve as an immunological chaff, thereby antagonizing opsonization and clearance of infected cells by NS1-specific IgG and IgA isotype antibodies."

Time for a proper #introduction:

I'm a neuronal cell biologist, leading the NeuroCyto Lab in Marseille, France. We study the functional architecture of the axon down to the nanoscale. We ask: how do the cytoskeleton and scaffolds contribute in making this unique compartment both resilient and adaptable in physiological and pathological conditions? Part of this consists in making the best possible images of cells using advanced microscopy techniques - and these images can also be beautiful!
