My argument, at its core, is that to do that, we need to teach people why science deserves their trust – and this requires teaching how science works as a social institution. I've written about this in brief in a Science American article: scientificamerican.com/article

I just used fedifinder.glitch.me to import people I follow on Twitter as followers here. It worked well.

What if we could trace #cytotoxic #Tcells throughout the human body before and during #cancer #immunotherapy?

Researchers at the University of Groningen have used a CD8-specific positron emission tomography (#PET) tracer in a phase 1/2 clinical trial. Patients with solid tumors were imaged before and ~30 days after starting treatment with #antibodies against PD-L1, PD-1, and/or CTLA-4.

In #JapaneseFolklore hyakki yagyo is the night parade of one hundred demons. On inauspicious nights, all the #yokai, ghosts and other supernatural creatures parade through the streets of #Japan, singing and dancing wildly. For anyone foolish enough to be outside, or even to peek out of their window, an encounter with the pandemonium of the dreaded night parade will result in death, or being spirited away by malevolent yokai.

I'm always amazed at the talent of past dissection drawings by microscope-biologists: this bee by Pfurtscheller dates to 1902.

Our next term "Stem #Cells" starts with S. Dr. Simon Haas, head of a #BIH junior #research group within the joint focus area “Single-Cell Approaches to Personalized Medicine” launched by the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), @MDC_Berlin and #Charité – Universitätsmedizin #Berlin does research on stem #cells and has recently even received a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for his work. It will total €1.5 million over five years: bihealth.org/en/notices/wie-si

Ok, not sure where this will lead. I am here to connect with interested in (and far beyond) and shamelessly promote the results of the hard working students, I am privileged to supervise in - I may occasionally post non-science content.

#Advent Day19: #Drosophila busckii, in the subgenus Dorsilopha (ha!), is the last of our global human commensals. A charismatic looking fly, I often find Dbus in compost heaps, and it is unusual in liking rotting potatoes & brassicas link.springer.com/article/10.1 , and once—famously—a formalin-preserved fish drosophila.jp/jdd/class/070201 ). Busckii’s love of rot has even implicated it as a horticultural vector of the generalist plant (and fly) bacterial pathogen Erwinia carotovora pure.knaw.nl/ws/portalfiles/po

"We observed a significant increase in the expression of IL-31RA, but not its cognate ligand IL-31 during house dust mite- and Schistosoma mansoni soluble egg antigen-induced allergic asthma. In support of this, IFN-γ and Th2 cytokines, IL-4 and IL-13, upregulated IL-31RA but not IL-31 in airway smooth muscle cells (ASMC). Importantly, the loss of IL-31RA attenuated AHR but had no effects on inflammation and goblet cell hyperplasia in allergic asthma or mice treated with IL-13 or IFNγ."

"O universo de docentes e investigadores com contratos temporários - alguns assinados de semestre a semestre - é cada vez mais expressivo e tem vindo a aumentar gradualmente desde 2007, segundo o estudo Regime Jurídico das Instituições de Ensino Superior (2007-2022) - Contributos para uma revisão fundamentada, encomendado pelo Sindicato Nacional do Ensino Superior (SNESup)."

Universities often announce increases in faculty diversity; how is that adding up? 🧵

In a new analysis of US federal data in Nature Human Behavioir with @NeilLewisJr & @HopesPsychology@twitter.com, we show that the U.S. is not succeeding in diversifying faculty.

We also (1) analyze whether the pipeline analogy is helping or hurting and (2) compute what it would take to achieve faculty parity in our lifetime.
