Serotonin is such an enigma.

In a fresh paper by the lab of Mark Andermann it is shown that serotonin gates the information flow from retina to thalamus.

Trying to understand the bigger picture, we have recently proposed that serotonin has a central role in digesting information. Our paper w @macshine @DrYohanJohn @claireocallaghan and others can be found here: shine-lab.org/wp-content/uploa

This is my first mastodon message. I am a twitter refugee. I care and hence anticipate will talk mostly about ecological statistics, statistical literacy, Rstats, and disinformation about climate change, vaccines and other fields often attacked by science deniers. Occasional rants on various topics might occur. #TwitterRefugee #introductions

'The mutant flowers were UV reflective as expected but additionally contained low levels of visible anthocyanin pigments. Hawkmoths strongly preferred the wild-type P. axillaris over the myb-fl mutant, whereas both social and solitary bee preference depended on the level of visible color of the mutants.'

"Conditional absence of C3aR1/C5aR1 on neutrophils lowered serum BAFF levels, led to fewer Peyer’s patch germinal center B cells, reduced germinal center B cells IgA class-switching, and lowered fecal IgA levels. Together, the results indicate that sequential activation of complement on neutrophils crucially supports humoral TI and mucosal IgA responses through upregulating neutrophil production of BAFF."

"Over the course of this year, I've noticed that the disinformation campaigns have gotten monumentally worse,", @Angie_rasmussen told me. "We've really come into an era where not only is disinformation rampant, which does make it a lot harder to respond effectively to any of these emerging diseases ...but we're actually seeing the people who are sort of avatars of science and evidence based reasoning, being attacked to the point where people are saying that they're criminals."

'We have developed novel Chimeric Adapter Proteins (CAPs) that are designed to trigger signaling downstream of the TCRζ chain. CAPs are chimeric molecules that contain adapter domains in tandem with the kinase domain of ZAP70, fused to an extracellular targeting domain.'

The latest episode of the EMBO Podcast is out 🎧

I spoke with Roger Reddel & Tracy Bryan at Sydney's Children's Medical Research Institute about their classic 1995 @embojournal paper describing independent lengthening in immortalised cell lines. It challenged conventional wisdom at the time - and it was Bryan's PhD project, quite a way to get started in science.

@miguelgf provided some perspective on the work and its enduring significance and editor @HVodermaier explained 's interest in studies with striking findings that may not provide a full mechanistic description.

You can listen to "ALTernative immortality" at the link below or on your preferred podcast app. Special thanks to Igor Jukic & audio producer extraordinaire @marcoantonio

'Most of Big Tech got rich on software, which is easily updatable and basically free to distribute at scale. Such online innovation rightly places a huge premium on “failing fast”: getting a product out quickly, building a following and fixing the bugs later.

The same is simply not true for a car, a medicine or even a new flavour of packaged meat. They have to work correctly and meet regulatory standards right off the bat. Production facilities and distribution networks cannot be conjured out of thin air, or easily amended after the fact.'

'The recommended duration of treatment for rifampin-resistant tuberculosis in programmatic care settings is 9 to 20 months and involves up to 20 tablets per day. Cost, adverse events, and social disruption are prominent challenges. More effective, shorter treatments with a more acceptable side-effect profile are needed.'

'A similar disaster threatened the D.R.C. last September. Members of a family in North Kivu Province fell ill with fevers, vomiting and diarrhea, one after the other. Then their neighbors became sick, too.

But that set off a series of steps that the D.R.C. put in place after the 2018 outbreak. The patients were tested, the cases were quickly confirmed as a new outbreak of Ebola and, right away, health workers traced 50 contacts of the families.'
