Happy birthday to Canadian geneticist Irene Ayako Uchida (1917-2013)! #linocut Uchida is shown surrounded by chromosones, with anomalies (shown with pink arrows) due to radiation exposure, based on one of her research papers. A strand of DNA is hidden in the image (as her watchband).

'In this issue of Nature Medicine, Cascone et al.2share the latest results of their phase 2 platform trial, NEOSTAR, which suggest that the addition of CTLA-4 blockade to neoadjuvant anti-PD-1 plus chemotherapy may augment anti-tumor responses.'

There are some drawbacks, with monoclonals being more vulnerable to the emergence of escape variants than vaccines, but this is a sensible proposal (the other major drawback is price, but that is a regulatory and not scientific issue).

"As a dual-purpose platform technology, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) can close the gap in prophylaxis that exists with a vaccine-only approach and serve as a therapeutic option where needed. Thus, the development of an arsenal of ready-to-use prophylactic and therapeutic mAbs could help to rapidly contain future infectious disease outbreaks before they evolve into pandemics."

'En unos meses abrirá en Cala Montjoi (Girona) su proyecto más ansiado, por el que lleva esperando, por problemas con las obras, protestas medioambientales y pandemia, ocho años. En junio inaugurará elBulli 1846, un museo que pretende guardar la esencia y la memoria de todo lo vivido durante años en elBulli, cerrado desde 2011, pero que su artífice pretende que no caiga en el olvido, sobre todo para quienes no vivieron aquella locura gastronómica.'

Forced birth in a country with:

—No universal healthcare
—No universal childcare
—No paid family & medical leave
—One of the highest rates of maternal mortality among rich nations

This isn't about "life." It's about control.

'O problema não está em que haja presença partidária e marca partidária na governação, está na cada vez maior desqualificação e mediocridade do pessoal político nos partidos. E como são o que são, desertificam tudo à sua volta.'

'The study, published in the journal Nature, focused on swabs taken from surfaces in early 2020 at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, a large market where many of the earliest known Covid patients had worked or shopped. The Chinese scientists had posted an early version of their genetic analysis of those samples in February 2022, but at the time downplayed the possibility of animal infections at the market.'

'Rich with words and references from Indigenous and Afro-Brazilian cultures, the modernist novel was hailed as a classic upon its publication in 1928, and has long been seen as an allegory for Brazil’s unique cultural blend. Faced with criticism of the book’s uncredited reliance on anthropological research, Andrade offered up, in an open letter, a typically insouciant response: “I copied Brazil.”

'Many art experts say Lichtenstein’s use of source comics was fair appropriation. Yet Eisman, 96, who lives in New Jersey, tells The Washington Post by email: “I’d say it’s theft.” He hopes people will watch the documentary and see it as evenhanded, intended to represent both sides with the aim to let “the viewers make up their own minds and not just leave it to the so-called experts.”

This strategy worked pretty well in Brazil, where they were referred to as 'sandwich PhDs'. The difficulty was providing good conditions for people to thrive locally after their PhDs. But it should also be noted that, in the case of the researchers who ultimately stayed or returned to institutions abroad, it also provided a great mentoring network for the next generation of students, as well as a valuable resource for the local scientific community through consortia, collaborations, reagent sharing, etc.

“Most PhDs focus on the individual, but in this programme, the focus was on building institutional capacity at Makerere,” Waiswa says. “The research you do was also meant to be aligned to national development priorities.”
