Portugal decriminalised drugs in 2001 and subsequently treated drug abuse as a public health issue. Between 1999 and 2016 deaths from overdose fell by 92%.

If Westminster refuses to even consider this approach then future deaths are on their hands.

"There were, however, times when the biological sciences were not yet domesticated and did not march nicely in pairs on the leash of chemistry."

'This proof-of-concept study suggests that bNAbs may represent a promising treatment modality for infants and children living with HIV-1. Future studies using newer bNAb combinations with greater breadth and potency are warranted.'

Opportunities for creative expression through arts in medicine programs are increasing in U.S. hospitals.

Making #art offers something that just taking pills can’t.

Evidence shows that taking part in art programs has many therapeutic benefits, such as reducing #anxiety and stress, supporting #mentalhealth and well-being and connecting people to one another.

Facebook reportedly turned over chat messages between mother and daughter, leading to charges of abortion-related felonies. You all think you'll be able to just go to another state or Canada, but don't be so sure. Your phone knows everything, and tech will snitch.

'Compared to Clarence Thomas’s gifts from the richest 1 percent of Nazi memorabilia enthusiasts, the sudden payment of Brett Kavanaugh’s extravagant credit card debts, or Samuel Alito’s propinquity to hedge fund billionaires, apparently the decision to take out loans to get an education is unforgivable.'

I'm happy to report that the third edition of my textbook Evolution, coauthored with @LeeDugatkin, is now available.

The new edition features expanded coverage of anthropogenic evolution as well as a strengthened focus on data literacy and data reasoning.

If you're an instructor in this field or training to become one, drop me a DM or email, and I can get you an evaluation copy.

PNAS commentary on the first year of their Consultative Peer Review Pilot

'The pilot is designed to encourage the submission of research that is sufficiently multidisciplinary and presents a challenge in finding reviewers, is counter to a prevailing view, or is too far ahead of its time to receive a fair review. Authors whose work qualifies for this review option can submit through the pilot to have their work thoroughly and efficiently reviewed by experts in the fields most relevant to their research.'

Lorenzo Romano Amedeo Carlo Avogadro died #OTD in 1856.

In honor of Avogadro's contributions to molecular theory, the number of molecules per mole of substance is named the Avogadro constant, NA. It is exactly 6.02214076×10^23 mol−1. The Avogadro constant is used to compute the results of chemical reactions. It allows chemists to determine the amounts of substances produced in a given reaction to a great degree of accuracy. via @wikipedia
