Following from Collinson's paper, here is my take on scaling up volume electron microscopy for connectomics in the #UK or any country willing to commit about 10 to 20 million a year:

From the humble #Drosophila to the #mouse brain, passing through the mosquito, honeybee, gecko lizards and the Etruscan shrew.
It's possible, it's feasible, it's timely: therefore we must.
At the end of July, the volume EM community met for their first GRC meeting. Following on from the fantastic coverage at #vEMtura23, Ana Correia and James Thompson share their meeting report on FocalPlane.

This #ThrowbackThursday, we look back at the popular 'Forgotten classics' post about Gustafson and Wolpert's 1967 paper "Cellular movement and contact in sea urchin morphogenesis."

Meet the lab of Jenny Nichols, based in the MRC Human Genetics Unit in the Institute for Genetics and Cancer at the University of Edinburgh!
The lab studies early mammalian development, in particular preimplantation cell lineage acquisition and gastrulation in mouse and human.

A survey from Nature found that about half of scientists who used to use Twitter have cut back or quit it entirely & half are using other platforms. It's great to see you here instead! https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-02554-0
It’s broken record time again: We desperately need to do better at teaching ethics to people in STEM.
I’ve just reported an LLM project to the platforms it uses, as an imminent threat to life. It “enables a user to have an interactive dialogue about medical conditions, symptoms…” with ChatGPT.
It does NOT MATTER how many disclaimers you put in front of that. It is an imminent threat to life, and you will not implement it.

In their Review, Yipeng Du, Matthew Sieber and colleagues discuss the role of metabolic pathways in driving cellular quiescence and the impact in #development and #disease.

Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot died #OTD in 1832.
He published only one book, the Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire, in which he expressed the first successful theory of the maximum efficiency of heat engines and laid the foundations of the new discipline: thermodynamics. His work attracted little attention during his lifetime, but it was later used by Rudolf Clausius and Lord Kelvin to formalize the second law of thermodynamics and define the concept of entropy. via @wikipedia
New breath test shows promise for rapid #COVID19 detection https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/covid-19/new-breath-test-shows-promise-rapid-covid-19-detection
The test could be more accurate than at-home tests and faster than polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or swab-based tests, which can take at least 15 minutes to produce results. The test was also able to detect different variants of #COVID, which could be helpful in predicting and identifying surges within a community.
'With his student, Jeff Richards, he found that addition of the hormone ecdysone could trigger a self-running process of sequential changes in the pattern of puffs. This led to the first proposal of the existence of cascades of gene regulation during development, which was presented at the 1973 Cold Spring Harbor Symposium'

Jorge Luis Borges was born #OTD in 1899. Borges's works have contributed to philosophical literature and the fantasy genre, and have had a major influence on the magic realist movement in 20th century Latin American literature. via @wikipedia
Published quite recently. Rights to Jorge Luis Borges’s work go to his wife’s nephews:
