"That then, is the simple reason why discovering drugs is hard; because we are dealing with a biological system that still escapes our rational understanding and because we are trying to engineer a molecule that perturbs this incompletely understood system, and that too while being forced to satisfy multiple constraints. It's like being asked to find a black cat in the dark, with the added constraint that one of your feet is bound to the top of your head, and you only get three tries."

Why big numbers break our brains.

NPR quotes a neuroscientist: "Our brains are evolutionarily very old and we are pushing them to do things that we've only just recently conceptualized."

We saw the new ant display at the AMNH last summer. It's incredible:

"It was a cold, gray afternoon in December, and at the American Museum of Natural History, a half million leaf-cutter ants were hunkered down in their homes."

'Sem querer falar de “dar esperança”, mas sim de “dar coisas concretas” aos portugueses, Rui Tavares é claro quanto aos seus objectivos: “Queremos ajudar a esquerda a ganhar estas eleições. A esquerda tem de saber defender os serviços públicos e apresentar propostas de futuro. E queremos também evitar que os extremistas cheguem perto do poder.”

"The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit affirmed a ruling that sided with the State of #Texas, which had sued the Biden administration, arguing that the federal guidance issued in 2022 was an overstep that would 'force #abortions.'”

An overstep. Got that? The state government that wants to intervene preemptively in emergency situations of life and death is concerned that NOT being allowed to do so is a federal government "overstep." 🤬

"It may seem paradoxical, but just because laws of physics apply to everything doesn’t mean they explain everything. Sometimes they just aren’t the right tool. The equations of particle physicists don’t explain evolution any more than they explain genes or epidemics."

'The crudest form of that is "Depression is caused by lack of serotonin", which makes it sound like a vitamin deficiency that can be cured by dietary supplements. A more realistic version is "Depression is a disorder of serotonin-based signaling in particular brain regions", but that still leaves an awful lot of hand-waving to be done.'

“When it hits a large, charismatic species like a polar bear, people suddenly sit up and listen – or at least I hope they will. We’ve already got a pandemic in biodiversity and it’s called H5N1 because it’s killed so many birds and mammals.”

Exobasidium is a parasitic fungi that lives in plants as an endoparasite. It galls flowers changing the scale and morphology of flowers and other plant structures in surprising ways.

I just found out they exist and I'm shocked, fascinated and horrified.

They were mentioned in passing in this Crime Pays video (I have NOT been binge watching CPBD looking for ant cameos, what kind of weirdo would do something that? Not me. youtube.com/watch?v=UaUMcaKgkw)

"Transcriptomic and chromatin accessibility analyses identified a reactive microglial population defined by the concomitant expression of inflammatory signals and cell-intrinsic stress markers whose frequency increased with age and APOE4 burden."

It's crystal ball season:

"Will Novo Nordisk end the year as Europe’s most valuable company?

Yes. In 2023, obesity treatment Wegovy became one of the most successful drug launches of all time and Denmark’s Novo overtook luxury goods group LVMH in value. But 2024 looks challenging for those selling highly priced handbags to China — while Novo’s main issue in selling highly priced obesity medication is how quickly it can produce it. After winning over patients and doctors to using its diabetes drug for obesity, Novo is now expanding access and coverage in a market where perhaps 1mn people are being treated out of a patient population of 100mn in the US and 700mn globally."

"After 16,000 years of domestication, the breed began to fall from favour in the middle of the 20th century as farms were mechanised and tractors and cars replaced horses. In the 1940s, there were between 40,000 and 60,000 Garranos in Portugal. Current estimates put the total population at 1,500-3,000."

"El medicamento, que se inyecta en las nalgas, contiene un fármaco antirretroviral, el cabotegravir, que se libera a lo largo de un periodo de dos meses, razón por la cual se denomina CAB-LA (abreviatura de cabotegravir de acción prolongada). Pero Sudáfrica se ha topado con un obstáculo aparentemente insalvable: el precio."
