Not sure why it's so hard to get it to spit out a picture of Richard Nixon slapping a small child. I'm sure that happened all the time.

Decided to try my hand at Stable Diffusion and I think I may have found a new hobby. If I can stay disciplined, learn and refine the tool, well, next year's holiday cards are going to be amazing. And if not, next year's holiday cards are going to be baffling and deeply unsettling. I'm perfectly comfortable with either outcome.

A fun thing about working public sector in NYC is sometimes there are situations where the interpreters need interpreters.

It is the final day of Thanksgiving 2022. I'm ready to say goodbye.

Few things as satisfying as day after thanksgiving chaos plate dinner. Second thanksgiving is awesome.

When i was a kid, I thought draculas bit their victim and used their fangs like straws to suck the blood. I pictured it a lot like drinking a Capri Sun, except the draculas teeth were the straws. I still kinda believe this.

@horseface I've gotten a lot of good and sometimes conflicting viewpoints on this query over the years. I've also chosen "artist" and "musician" at different points and still wound up in the same place. Mostly this is just something I get to thinking about every now and again when the topic of gatekeeping pops up. :-)

The US is fucked on guns cause half the country thinks the alternative to gun violence is tyranny.

I sat on the fence as long for as long as my ethics would allow me to, but bringing Trump back to Twitter was it for me. I used Twitter as a consumption/aggregation type service for news and analysis and Mastodon is distinctly not that. However, it does remind me a bit of the BBS systems I loved growing up so that’s been a pleasant realization. Gonna be tough not being a wallflower though. I fully intend to post through it. I’m sorry, everyone.

I kinda just want to sit around, drink beer and write code tonight. Might just fall asleep. Got a world of possibility ahead of me.

Based on my uselessly small sampling, turn out in my neighborhood looks pretty good today. That’s encouraging. Can’t wait to be disappointed. My fellow Americans, please vote today. Bonus points for not voting for sociopaths!

There is something wildly amusing to me about the fact that I’ve gotten more actual, human engagement with my posts in less than 1 week on Mastodon than I have in 13 years on Twitter. It’s almost as if monetizing engagement artificially shapes conversations. Or maybe I just got way better at posting overnight. It’s probably that second thing since the alternative means business guys are bad at people stuff and that capitalism has uncorrectable problems.

@pep You're right in that it truly is semantics after a certain point. It always just strikes me as funny that it's easier for us to classify others than it is for us to turn that lens back on ourselves. I only just got to thinking about it cause I've had multiple folks approach me at work with "You're a programmer, right? Can you take a look at this for me..." So it goes.

@blake Very similar for me. Started as a kid in the 80s, sys admin/engineer by trade for 20+ years, written lots of code (in maybe half as many languages, kudos on that), etc. It wasn't until I recognized that I was now the gray beard that others were going to for answers that I felt comfortable even using engineer as a self descriptor. To my mind, I'm just a computer guy. The rest feels like window dressing.

@vunderkind That's pretty much where I'm at with it. It's like whatever the opposite of imposter syndrome is. I'm just glad it ain't just me. 👍

@freemo I am oddly impressed you had objective benchmarks on the ready. Well played.

Question: at what point do folks consider themselves programmers? Or scientists?

I've written programs, but don't feel I've earned the title "programmer". I've used the scientific method to identify and resolve issues, but "scientist"? Not I. At what point do folks feel comfortable identifying themselves that way? Just wondering if anyone else is pondering what I'm pondering.
