@stormy178@mastodon.stormy178.com @MelodyCooper

And when someone staps someone or beats them with a bat do we cry about how bats are legal... Yes there is a problem, but absurd solutions like making guns illegal is obviously not the answer.

@freemo @stormy178@mastodon.stormy178.com @MelodyCooper
Hmm, there is a disconnect: it was stated that guns should be regulated, with strict background checks. Your reply talks of "making guns illegal".

Did you reply to the wrong toot here or do you think background checks are a bad thing? If so, do you wish for people with known agression problems (psychological disorders or former history of violent crimes) to be able to have guns?

@admitsWrongIfProven

I dont think you can see the toot i replied to, the person blocked me.

I am not against background checks in their current form, which is thurough and complete.

The one issue with the current setup is loopholes at gun shows. But that doesnt appear to be a huge source of actual problems so yra im for background checks as they exist today.
@stormy178@mastodon.stormy178.com @MelodyCooper

@freemo @stormy178@mastodon.stormy178.com @MelodyCooper
You might want to state that, the toot history i read showed you ignoring the distinction between banning and background checks... it changes the meaning completely.

@admitsWrongIfProven

No i was quite clear i was talking about a specific type of commonly proposed restriction, banning.

@stormy178@mastodon.stormy178.com @MelodyCooper

@freemo And who you responded to was quite clear that background checks matter.

@admitsWrongIfProven @freemo we already have background checks... Just not for private sale. They have straw purchase laws that making gifting a weapon a pain too. But some states do allow private sale which doesn't need to go through federal background checks. It's not a loophole. It's common sense. If I have a firearm I dont use and a friend or family member interested in buying it from me there is no need to have government involved adding their taxes and fees.

@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven

I mean i dont mind private sales. But yea they should be taxed and follow regulation ideally.

@freemo @thatguyoverthere
Well for the topic at hand, it would not exactly matter if a sale is public or private - just that background checks are performed.
Are private sellers liable for what is done with their gun until background checks are performed?
Sell to a loonie, get imprisoned for their murder, right?

@admitsWrongIfProven @freemo some states require a "transfer" which involves a background check. Some respect privacy.
Follow

@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven

Public gu sales require a paper trail be kept. This is a bigger issue for me than just the background check

@freemo @admitsWrongIfProven yeah agreed. I was just saying that some states do require a background check although it's ancillary to the transfer which is the paper trail. I think I conflate the background check with the transfer in my head though because you can't have one without the other.

@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven

Yea but in private sales you dont have to transfer ownership at the point of sale. Sometimes you dont have to record it at all

@freemo @admitsWrongIfProven yeah that part depends on the state. Here in wv no need but that doesn't mean you can sell homemade fgc-9 or ar pistols from the back of your truck. You also can't buy a gun for your wife. If you buy a gun and want to gift it to someone they are expected to come in and pick do the transfer. I think it's different if you give one from your collection, but if it could look like a straw purchase it's probably illegal.

@freemo @thatguyoverthere Sounds perfect, if the goal is to have a gun as a someone with rage control issues.

@admitsWrongIfProven @thatguyoverthere

As ive stated, it is a valid loophole. Im fine with addressing.

That said as long as attacks on gun rights are underway id be hesitant to fix this issue when the first amendment is already so grossly abused. If thr left werent calling for further constitutional violations id probably be louder about fixing this loophole. As it stands it might be one of very few ways people will have quick access to guns if in need.

@freemo You're either really bad at convincing people guns should be loosly regulated or really good at riling people up to want to ban guns... i cannot decide which.

Does your own perception of the consequences of your toots differ?

@admitsWrongIfProven Hard to judge. Most of the time whatever peoples ideas on guns happen to be will not be changed by my opinion. I also have noninterest in convincing people of anything, i enjoy talking about it, but its more about seeing how people can be led to beleive lies as long as thry are popular enough rather than a desire to convince people.

I do know over the years at least 20 or 30 people have changed their mind specifically because of the data ive shared and never once was i made aware of anyone who was on the fence and changed to an antigun stance because of something I shared. So im pretty happy with the outlook if that is to be the measure anyway.

@admitsWrongIfProven

I also know people who are antigun consistently think progun arguments are shit. I dont think ive ever once heard a strongly antigun person go "You make an excellent progun argument but i still disagreee due to..." like never, not unless thry were on the fence on the issue... so at best your assessment is predictable, meanwhile the progun people will generally share and praise my argument with a similar level of bias. But hey they may be biased but at least they are the correct one of the two.

@admitsWrongIfProven @freemo a person with rage control issues and no criminal record can still likely go buy a gun. Or do you think we aught to have a psych eval every time we want a new gun? That's pretty crazy if so considering the us has a history of using mental health against people in exploitative ways. Imagine a world where you need a psych eval to buy a car or a hammer or a bag of pebbles? Madness

@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven

Its worse than that... if the consequence of struggling with mental health and seeing a doctor has the consequence of revoking ones rights the end result is people who care about being able to buy a gun will go out of their way not to talk about or seek medical help for their mental illnesses.

The end result is increasing the number of people that get no help with their mental illness and a lot more of the wrong sort of people owning guns.

@freemo Might be that some other factors aggrevate the violence in the usa, yes.

I think there are countries with as much guns, but way less shootings.

Question for me would be: what would produce results in the short term, because the social problems won't be solved over night. If there is any effort made at all, i can't judge that from here.

@admitsWrongIfProven Oh thats easy, immediate, extreme, tax funded access to therapy and medication for everyone. Implement this immediately and you will find easily the biggest short term solution that also has thr benefit of working even better as a long term solution

@freemo That's a positive approach i appreciate very much. I would think there needs to be more, like work against poverty, but your suggestion is doubtlessly a good one.

@admitsWrongIfProven you asked for short term and immediate solutions. Fixing poverty is very impactful but also more of a long term sokution and not quite as easy to address

@thatguyoverthere @freemo Ah yes, now that you mention it, we have that all the time.
Just yesterday i had to have my head reattached, always such a hassle!

@admitsWrongIfProven @thatguyoverthere

I lived for 30 out of my 40 years in the USA. Ive been threatened at knife point twice, ive never once been threatened with a gun in person.

@thatguyoverthere Haha yeah, that was the point. Would you joke about being beheaded, if you were?

@thatguyoverthere What survivers? That mechanism doesn't work if people aren't killed by the numbers...

@admitsWrongIfProven so hold on. If I say I've never been robbed at gun point I am experiencing a bias, but if you have never knowingly been at risk of beheading then it's not biased? Amazing.
@admitsWrongIfProven @freemo I mean... There was the French teacher, charli hebdo (spelling), Ariana whatever concert .... Multiple rampage stabbing events in London... So much that they want to round off the kitchen knives... Many other absolutely terrible events that just happen not to include guns.

@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven @freemo various incidents involving axes and knives in germany, more often than mainstream reports on it.

you wouldn't have someone killing multiple people with an axe if we had legal carry here.

@admitsWrongIfProven why? if someone wants to kill others he'll just use a knife, hammer or a car like we have seen.

@bonifartius You do realize that hammers or knives yield higher risk for the attacker, right?

If i told you "shoot that bear", that might sound feasible. What about i give you a knife instead and let you have at it? Changes the "courage" needed, doesn't it?

@admitsWrongIfProven @bonifartius you do realise that the victim potentially having hammers and knives yields less risk for the attacker, right? One of the cool things about guns is that a victim armed with a gun gas much better chances of defending themselves from an attacker with a gun than the same situation with melee weapons, especially since thugs tend to target weaker marks like women.

@Amikke @bonifartius Ah, the old problem of "never sleep, always alert" again. Not a valid reason imo.

@admitsWrongIfProven @Amikke it's my duty to my fellow humans to be alert. alertness is not panic. trading in alertness for comfort is a bad deal. alertness isn't only limited to self defense situations. something burning? lost dog? old lady wants to cross the street? all of those require alertness.

@admitsWrongIfProven @Amikke i'm pretty OT here, but the poison of "someone else handles that" is really evil. people even have no compassion anymore, except for when someone else tells them. someone else usually is the state or one of it's fronts.

@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven @freemo "legal". now we have violent armed state sponsored thugs keeping others from exercising their natural right of self defense with proper means.

@bonifartius @thatguyoverthere @freemo Ah, now i'm on board again. "Lützerath", a german town with a coal quarry, has had those thugs. They forcefully removed peaceful protestors against the mining of coal unnecessary for our energy needs.

In truely american style, instead of peaceful protest, maybe lots of guns could have yielded a better result. Purely hypothetical, but humans killing other humans might just be better for the environment.

@admitsWrongIfProven @bonifartius @thatguyoverthere

You wanted an example of why i thought yojr arguments are bad faith, you have another example.of it here

@freemo @bonifartius @thatguyoverthere So then, what thugs are we talking about? It is in extremely bad faith to just pose "thugs" and then critizise me.

@admitsWrongIfProven @bonifartius @thatguyoverthere

No not listing thr thugs may be incomplete but not bad faith. Your response woukd be to ask (as you did) and thrn if thr other person is arguing in good faith thry will answer, which they also did.

@freemo @bonifartius
You kind of ignore how it is relevant.
The coal was reported to be unnecessary, the protest legit, the police working for the interests of the industry, not the people.

They were state sponsored thugs in this instance, forgive me for exaggerating things to show how absurd i find the idea of using violence here.

@admitsWrongIfProven @bonifartius

No i dont ignore it.. relevant or not they may have been arguing poorly (thats debatable) but thats not bad faith. A bad faith argument is when you intentionally and blindly try to manipulate the conversation to win.

If i thought they **intentionally** hid or lied about who they are, sure. Bjt no they were happy to explain so not bad faith.

@freemo @bonifartius I did use exaggeration, i'll give you that. But i would argue that bad faith arguments are a bit more than that.

@admitsWrongIfProven @bonifartius

I agree exageration isnt really the factor that makes it bad faith. The mocking is strongly suggestive though, which is how the exageration comes across.

Show newer

@admitsWrongIfProven this isn't about american style any more than there are americans who are voluntaryist :)

to be beaten and robbed by the state and still thinking it's a good idea to have armed gangs with a monopoly on violence is a bit weird.

you wouldn't have had lüzerath in the first place as the state couldn't simply disown people for the "common good".
@thatguyoverthere @freemo

@bonifartius I don't understand why you would trust private ownership to be more in the interest of the common good?

@admitsWrongIfProven because private ownership never tried to fuck with me yet. they might just do it, but that still is to be seen.

additionally, corpocracy happens _because_ of a state enabling it by providing said thugs and keeping people from defending themselves.

@bonifartius It seems we have very different personal outlooks. Can't really imagine it is possible to discuss this rationally in the brevity needed here. Would be more like days of talking than a few messages.

@admitsWrongIfProven no harm done!

you can read en.m.wikisource.org/wiki/No_Tr or watch some videos of m.youtube.com/user/LarkenRose if you are interested where i got my ideas from ;)

in essence it's about universal nonviolence except for self defense.

.. or mobbed and beaten by a gang of refugees from a no-go zone, and ignored by the press
@GabeLakmann @admitsWrongIfProven @freemo yes but in America you or a witness can still shoot the assailant. In Europe you just get to watch
