@cobratbq Not natural at all.. new divers take quite a few dives before they get their boyancy control in check... For me as an expiernced diver at the top of the expertise scale, yes its very natural for me and i can do back flips and blow bubble rings, and go through very narrow openings with sharp edges comfortably... but it took many years and many hundreds of dives to get to that point.

Even now when i dont dive for a year I need to spend a little time in a pool or shallow water on my first dive just remembering my skills.. They come back quickly, but they really do take some practice.

@cobratbq Yup in the end its all about density... thats why as a scuba diver when im neutral if i breath in I go up, I exhale I go down.. I dive caves and often control my breath to control my movement.

Can someone please explain to me what a magnesia is and how exactly one goes about milking one?

@cobratbq

Its actually simple to understand... Fat floats, pour oil on water or put a stick of butter in water and see...

Muscle sinks and is denser than water.

The fatter you are the harder it is to sink... I am fat, I do not sink.

Who the fuck replaced the circuitry of my blood pressure cuff with a random number generator?

@freemo @futurebird @andyhilmer I think that "banned" is the wrong term to uses in most school districts. They simply lack the capacity to teach advanced math, including Calculus, even if they thought it was important and wanted to do so. Starting with early grades, they think of math as a series of drills to be memorized. Who would teach the needed abstract reasoning concepts?

It is the lefty liberal districts, that do have some math capable teachers who do actually ban access to higher level math. They do so because they are worried about "gaps", the early sorting of students into high and low math tracks, a practice that disproportionately disadvantaged Black and Latino students and made it harder for them to access advanced courses down the line. If you prohibit Algebra until 9th grade, some students are either getting outside supplementation, or they are being slowed down. Opportunities to burst forward are also not accessible. edweek.org/teaching-learning/s

Of course the issue isn't just school sorting, it is social and educational privilege that enables some families to provide their offspring with enriched environments, starting at the preschool level.

It is hard to create catch up opportunities in public schools, especially when so many elementary school teachers have week abstract learning/math skills themselves.

And we are a far cry from being a society where most adults understand at least the basic concepts of rate of change or approaching a limit. People don't understand that Calculus might actually have some relevance.

@cobratbq Yes I just checked.. As of my last dive if I exhale all my breath in salt water, I would need about 5kg in extra weight to be neutrally boyant. 6kg to sink effectively.

In fresh water, the number is likely closer to 3 - 4KG needed to sink without air in my lugs

@MichaelPorter

If by "I'm done" do you mean you are disengaging with the conversation (in which case I wont bother reading your posts since I dotn engage in one way conversations)... or do you simply mean your done with your series of comments and will await my response? If it is the later I will be happy to continue reading and comment if youd like.

> “Far-right” vs. “Anti-LGBT”: “Far-right” is a political position. “Anti-LGBT” is bigotry included within that position. These people are both.

Far right is a political position, yes, and anti-LGBT is something else, yes... But these people do **not** self proclaim as far-right.. they list a bunch of positions... it is the journalist who decided to litter the piece with their position and not just lavbel their position as right, but far-right. While I agree, it is far-right, I also recognize that is an opinion, and carries with it the loaded language of extremism and hate.. things I agree the group represents, but there is no place for a journalist to be littering their opinion on someones political position in a piece... If they self-proclaimed themselves as far-0right sure.. but to attach that label to a group is your opinion, and has no place in good journalism, even if i agree with that opinion.

> You would prefer that the author call them anti-LGBT, but this is only part of their platform. Besides, I’m sure a lot of them would claim that they *aren’t* anti-LGBT, just anti-groomer or anti-pedophile (they’re definitely anti-2SLGBTQQIA+). So it’s not as informative as calling them far-right.

I was only being sussinct.. What I prefer is the author list the views they state they have and leave it at that... any **opinion** about if their views are left, right far or otherwise should be for the reader to form not the journalist

@kdorse

> If you exhale a sufficient amount of air you can actually sit comfortably on the bottom of the pool without floating upwards.

this is not a universal truth.. depends on your body composition. If i exhale all my weight I will still have quite a few KG of positive boyancy.

> It's not a joke. I don't refer to drowning. It's just that the oxygen is in the blood, etc., not in extraneous reservoirs, making me heavy enough to sink.

It is because you dont have a giant bubble sitting in your lungs making you float yea.

> I think my trick uses the same basis as what the video explained.

We may be thinking of different videos then. In the video I watched the people who held their breath had a lung full of air, they didnt exhale. The guy did sit ont he bottom of the water despite having a lung full of air, but that is likely because he was either fairly muscular or had weights on.

@freepeoplesfreepress

You do have an unusual style about you... Maybe when i first met you it crossed my mind, but I dont think that anymore and havent thought that after getting to talk to you a bit.

@cobratbq Which one? I knew this fact for a very long time, but I was reminded of it by a veritassium video i recently watched.

@realcaseyrollins Yea he got in a lot of trouble for that.. ultimately even got him banned IIRC.

@freemo I do…I am teasing 😂

We have a history going back to when he and his (presumed) sock puppet accounts lead the #HeroesResist community on mstdn.social and they were borderline manipulating the trending hashtags on the corner of the #Fediverse. Not a fan, but I’m glad he has his own instance now for that community.

Interesting fact of the day... If you put a new born baby under water they will instinctually know to hold their breath until they come to the surface. It is called the Mammalian Dive Reflex and infact engages all sorts of different responses from the heart, to blood flow to the spleen.

@futurebird

Why isit banned? What is the consequence if a child learns it and violates the ban?

@andyhilmer

@freepeoplesfreepress

Well if i ever succeed at true general AI I will let you know.

To me RFK's face looks like his eyes, nose,l and mouth are "shrunk" and too small for the rest of his face... Dunno whats up there.

@freemo Did he celebrate when #Trump did the same thing, or complain when it was one of the first things #JoeBiden rescinded? I’m curious.

@realcaseyrollins If you know this guy at all you;d know the answer to that...

All things that arent DNC are evil, all things that are DNC are good or excusable... Thats all you need to know to know his opinion on anything and everything.
