So energizing to see all this activity after just a few hours of launching the United Federation of Instances repo.

gitlab.com/ufoi/constitution

We already have 7 discussions going on and 2 merge requests for the proposal... The more people keep getting involved the more energy I have to put more into it. Cant wait to finish a draft of the bylaws.

@ufoi

@Ryle

If MRFs were a think on mastodon (someone correct me if im wrong but they arent) then id agree with you.. but I dont think it would work too well for the mastodon side.

@battaglia01

@bonifartius

I agree.. the proposal is meant to summarize the basic jist of it.. the bylaws document and Code of Ethics/Conduct documetn I write seperately will be much more detailed. I also agree the wording is very critical to strike a balance between justice and freedom.

This is actually sort of where coalitions come in. Their job can be to document subsets of the rules and provide lists which users can use.. for example if we decide to allow nudity then maybe as a compromise we can create coalition whose job it is to document instances that allow different types of nudity and then users can use that as a block list if they want or even as an allow list.

@battaglia01

@pwinn Its fair except for one very important fact... that all the accuasations against a server are heard and evidence documented, and democratically decided.

the point is the due process means there is a public ledger of all accusations made against the server and the evidence. and the decision... this level of transparency adds a vital level of protection

Illness, covid precautions

@toplesstopics I wish I could have gotten sent home from school for fatigue, I never would have been in school :)

@JonKramer Well if the rule is that it needs to be marked sensative, or behind CW (which is what i propose).. then yes you can still share it, it will just be obscured until someone clicks to view it.

@pwinn The advantage of the UFI, as you point out, is a more positive approach.. The idea is that anyone int he UFI is sort of "certified" to be a good-actor, at least, so far as the ethics of the UFI go..

So it has two advantages..

1) is it lets other instances outside of the UFI know i follow a certain minimal code of conduct

2) to add a zone of protection against people threatening to fediblock people if they dont block all the same people they do... by promising always to federate with other UFI members this makes them more immune to defederation so long as they remain a good actor.

@JonKramer We have already had two good discussions about the nudity issue... one she will be adding it later, but we had a quick back and forth... I think the best comrpomise there will be to allow top nudity but no genitals or sexual ones (like anal).

@friday

Sounds like if we had the same intent you should just join us and propose edits.. We would love to hear your ideas. The Gitlab is up so just hop on in and create any issues or merge requests and we will all discuss it.
