I lived for 30 out of my 40 years in the USA. Ive been threatened at knife point twice, ive never once been threatened with a gun in person.
@admitsWrongIfProven @thatguyoverthere
On that we agree, but not related to guns in anyway
@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven
Its worse than that... if the consequence of struggling with mental health and seeing a doctor has the consequence of revoking ones rights the end result is people who care about being able to buy a gun will go out of their way not to talk about or seek medical help for their mental illnesses.
The end result is increasing the number of people that get no help with their mental illness and a lot more of the wrong sort of people owning guns.
I also know people who are antigun consistently think progun arguments are shit. I dont think ive ever once heard a strongly antigun person go "You make an excellent progun argument but i still disagreee due to..." like never, not unless thry were on the fence on the issue... so at best your assessment is predictable, meanwhile the progun people will generally share and praise my argument with a similar level of bias. But hey they may be biased but at least they are the correct one of the two.
@admitsWrongIfProven Hard to judge. Most of the time whatever peoples ideas on guns happen to be will not be changed by my opinion. I also have noninterest in convincing people of anything, i enjoy talking about it, but its more about seeing how people can be led to beleive lies as long as thry are popular enough rather than a desire to convince people.
I do know over the years at least 20 or 30 people have changed their mind specifically because of the data ive shared and never once was i made aware of anyone who was on the fence and changed to an antigun stance because of something I shared. So im pretty happy with the outlook if that is to be the measure anyway.
@admitsWrongIfProven @thatguyoverthere
As ive stated, it is a valid loophole. Im fine with addressing.
That said as long as attacks on gun rights are underway id be hesitant to fix this issue when the first amendment is already so grossly abused. If thr left werent calling for further constitutional violations id probably be louder about fixing this loophole. As it stands it might be one of very few ways people will have quick access to guns if in need.
@eberhofer As a profressional oublished data scientist.. my god so much no..
No matter how many times you may show correlation it doesnt even suggest causation.
Take the classic ckrrelation kf pirates to global warming. Youd find that correlation in every single state in the whole of the world. Youd have 10000 different stro g correlations you coukd show if you broke it down by seperate regions... even with 10000 seperate correlations all showing pirates and global warming are **very strongly correlated** that strong pattern of correlation doesnt even hint at causation being at play.
@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven
Yea but in private sales you dont have to transfer ownership at the point of sale. Sometimes you dont have to record it at all
Yes, the climate has always changed.
But, the speed of recent change is unprecedented.
More importantly, we understand why.
Burning fossil fuels & deforestation adds carbon dioxide to the atmosphere which warms the planet.
Simple physics. Understood for more than a century.
@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven
Public gu sales require a paper trail be kept. This is a bigger issue for me than just the background check
@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven
Circumventing the law on taxes cause they are too high is not the way to address it. Im all for lowering taxes but not by illegally avoiding them.
That said id be ok with private sales being untaxed
@admitsWrongIfProven Agreed, good quality studies on this topic is much needed. Its a shame im stuck needing to try to do it myself indeed
@admitsWrongIfProven @thatguyoverthere
Well considering i already .entioned that this is a loophole id be fine fixing i woukd thinknit woukd be obvious that we agree its a problem.
@admitsWrongIfProven no i showed some usa examples (michegan i think might have been the only one). Most were outside like ireland, jamaica, and the UK. I am happy to provide more cou tries if thats all you need.
@eberhofer sadly no. There is a lot of research that supports various facts that are often manipukated and claimed thry support the argument at hand, when in fact they very much dont.
Take your argument. You are tryi g to claim a causative relationship, yet are not showing data that even remotely demonstrates causation and woukd be dismissed quite quickly by a data scientist to call that out.
We **do** have tools as data scientists to show causation and build that evidence (like granger causality) and you will always find such data, needed to actually show the point you are trying to make, as missing.
@admitsWrongIfProven @thatguyoverthere
No they arent usually liable for private sales that bypass a background check.
@msafaksari tha ks i really appreciate that and are glad you fou d your way here.
@admitsWrongIfProven i do t particularly care if someone wants to block me.. but says a lot about a persons disposition if thry block someone when they could just disagree and walk away.
The only thing i think i do all that provocative is make claims that are rooted in data which few people on the right do sadly. And on the left they are too used to sticking to some highly cherrypicked data so they arent used to needing to defend the data either way.
@thatguyoverthere @admitsWrongIfProven
I mean i dont mind private sales. But yea they should be taxed and follow regulation ideally.
