So just weighed myself for the first time in like a year and a half, basically before i left to go to Israel (which i now left).... Lost 30 lbs in that time, thats a nice surprise.

"Deplatforming is great until it happens to you"

This assumes you are speaking to a group of people who have never been deplatformed. But this is far from the case.

There isn't any politics free abstract solution. Deplatforming a fun video game forum because "video games cause violence" is bad.

Deplatforming nazis is good.

It's very messy and we will need to have discussions about the boundary forever.

"Just allow everything" isn't a solution and it doesn't even really do what it claims

@futurebird I largely agree, deplatforming isnt inherently good or bad, it depends on who is the target.

I do think there is legitimate concern that deplatforming is frivilous and abusive right now from both sides in many cases. That said im not sure deplatofrming is the issue, its more of a symptom. The real issue is just the toxic polarization we have in society that is causing cancel culture from both ends on everything under the sun.

@gojonnes space is a human invention that compares the void between objects...

I am not worried about "the rich getting paid to have babies"... and I wont speak to if 55% of 60K is a good limit or not, I am glad there is some limit at least. My point is, government assistance should be limited to those who dont make enough to afford it themselves, and even then should be conditional in such a way that improves the problem so they shouldnt need to ask for assistance in the future (ideally).

In my view if you need government assistance you should get it, this is regardless of if you have a baby.. but it should also be conditional on you commiting to additional training or education (paid for by the government) in a bid to try to raise your income so you wont need to come back and ask for money again.... regardless I certainly dont think it should be universal.

As for the US having a hard time solving it.. thats mostly because everyone argues so much and is so polarized reaching compromises on any issue is damn near impossible.

I am perfectly ok for the paid leave to be paid for by the government **if** it is limited to people who are of low enough income that they need that help. If we are talking middle class and they are such low income they need government help to take a maternity leave then I'd say there are larger economic problems at play.. for lower class its understandable, though again in a healthy economy the lower class wouldnt be that large.

@QasimRashid

@zardozWrex

No one is claiming the current system is perfect as is... But saying the current system is broken isnt a good argument for this particular claim to a solution.

@QasimRashid Thats a stretch to say the least...

Paid leave is assuming that a company has an obligation to pay you for your own life choices... the company isnt having the baby, it doesnt want or benefit from the baby, why should it have to fund your activities.

Now dont get me wrong I am 1200% behind the fact that if youare financially struggling with a kid the state should help you.. but I dont think a company should have any obligation to encourage you to have kids... if the company wants to as an incentive to hiring great.

Now I would agree that a new mother should have a right to unpaid leave that is short and reasonable without it being cause to fire someone... but financially, that baby is YOUR responsibility, not the companies.

@freemo I would if I had run into half those chemistries! I'm a HUGE fan of NiMh though. LiPo is amazing for it's unlimited form factors and unparalleled power density.

NiMh wins in the cold, it wins when it comes to overcharge (which lends to really flexible trickle charging options with tiny solar), it's form factor means you can add it to anything that would take 3 double A's and they are just neat overall.

LiFePo4 however is quickly becoming my new favourite!

@PlumpCat
Lithium Titanite is missing from your collection. I bought a bunch from Ali Express. Cool stuff. Safe to discharge to 0V. Won't catch fire if cut, punctured, etc. Very high cycle life.
@freemo

@poleguy

NVM, just checked, I do indeed have a pack of Lithium Titanite! That said I found ahuge 12V one for 600$ I might buy now :)

@PlumpCat

@poleguy

I have several other chemistries elsewhere, as well as other form factors... But you are correct I dont have any Lithium Titanite... buying now :)

@PlumpCat

@PlumpCat Keep in mind the chemistries and form factors are mostly independent... You can find virtually any chemistry in any form factor.

LiFePO4 is my favorite all around... Li-ion usb chargables are super cool, and as NiMh is quite nice when you want to abuse your batteries :)

I have a huge 12V car-battery style battery which is actually Li-ion and the charging regulator is built in, so you can charge it by just attached 14V to it and walking away.. even has a little battery % indicator... being as large as it is it has insane power capacity while being fairly light.

@realcaseyrollins

The return to work post COVID bit is fairly accurate. Joe doesnt get credit for that.

The bit about working two jobs however, true or not, isnt valid.. if a economy has enough jobs that you have the option to work two, great, nothing wrong with that. A better way to address that concern is to look at how the average wage may have changed. If people need to work more HOURS for the same pay, then yea, but that is regardless of how many jobs they may have.

Am i the only one who collects every possible chemistry of battery he can get his hands on?

@Clementulus yea their security is a bit insane even i thr best of circumstances.

@Clementulus When I traveled to Israel about 2 years ago at the border they asked "Do you have any weapons?"... I responded, while flexing "Just these guns!"... long story short they took me in the back and questioned me for like 3 hours before they let me in :)
