@hans Late 1500s
@mxtthxw Gun ownership wouldnt effect civil war either way as both sides are on equal footing int hat regard. And the geography excuse seems weak to me, we have no huge natural varriers and have land routers on **both** sides that covers about 1/3 of the land mass of the world...
@admitsWrongIfProven hahah its true.
I am native american, my dads line came over on the mayflower and is "american royalty" and they came from birish royalty. So literally that saide I am half white invader and oppressor, and half native american :)
> I’m just not convinced by it.
History shows it pretty well.. i mean hitler aside the japanese even tried to invade us and never got past hawaii. In fact despite us starting wars left and right there has never been a single battle on US soil with a foreign entity... never. For a country as large as the USA and one that starts a lot of shit that alone is telling.
> I remember a podcast, a guy was saying the reason people are polite in America is because of guns. That was weird, I’m generally polite irl and it has nothing to do with firearms.
Its also nonsense... Guns are almost never on americans minds and outside of maybe texas you will rarely even find one. Not counting police I think I've seen 2 guns in my entire life prior to me buying guns..
Plus the idea that you'd need to be in the USA to understand... nah... there isnt anything all that gun like about america. In fact I never owned guns before going to europe, and more generally traveling. It was literally my time abroad and in europe that changed my mind on gun ownership.
@mxtthxw LArgely
Tons of factors... Mosst of it is simply how people are raised.. thats probably 80% of the work. The rest is a multitude of factors but the largest one that the govt has any control over would be excellent access to mental health care
@mxtthxw The very first post in this thread was this:

I think i did boost some meme, but you didnt respond to it so I had no idea you were referncing it. In fact your post didnt tag me and was top-level. So I assumed I was responding to something completely unrelated to me.
> And New Zealand bought in additional controls after a mass shooting…
They certainly did respond to a shooting by making people less safe under the guise of
> It’s an emotive subject which I typically don’t involve myself in but the meme you shared I found totally unconvincing (I know, it’s just a meme) from an outside perspective safety... and yes thats a different tangent.
What meme? As far as I can see you started this post not me, and I never posted a meme.
> the gun thing in the US is mad, given how many kids, innocent people etc. get shot.
Why would the very thing protecting the lives of the kids and reducing the number being shot be madening? Yes there is aviolence issue int he USA that needs addressing... As I've laid out with statistics many many times before, when you ban kids MORE people die, in huge numbers, with little or no benefit. So yes its madening when people say "Why dont you address the violence issue int he USA by taking away peoples ability to defend themselves, who cares that the statistics show it will actually cause hundreds of thousands to die"
This is Sir John Freeman, Baron Fremingham of Glassenbury. He is my 15th great grandfather, a Knight, a Baron (british royalty).
He changed his name from DeFremingham to Freeman, I suspect the name change was due to membership in the freemasons, but since it predates the organization globally (grand lodges) it can be hard to be certain. But family tradition and history is highly suggestive here, my entire male line goes back to the beginning of free masonry and this name change just a few generations before that. So the link is highly suggestive.
It is from him my coat of arms and technically my status as british royalty, but functionally these things are meaningless, just interesting historic gems is all.
@mxtthxw Just use blanks.. fairly safe and the expiernce will be largely the same.
@thor My family coat of arms is somewhat similar.. though my coat of arms is from pre-history so not surprising.
> I think the 'I like guns' argument is pretty damn strong to be honest. Do you like guns?
I like guns is a fine argument as to why you want guns.. It just isnt the only valid argument, there are several and the logic checks out on all of them IMO
Guns are alright, it can be nice to shoot. There is funner stuff though
> It's impossible to say about Hitler, we can't re-run history.
**you** were the one who used the quality of politicians to back up your claim tht the argument was nonsense... It was "impossible" to say then too, but that didnt stop you. But now that you have a counter example of the same kind only now its "impossible to say"... thats the bias I am talking about.
Like I get it, I agree its hard to say for sure... but you did, and you were ok with that only so far as you thought it supported your point of view. Now that its clear the line of argument doesnt support it now its an issue?
> Back to the point, the US government, over and over, does horrible shit and there's been no uprising against it.
Right, as I addressed guns are not, and should not, be used to start murdering people every time the government does "horrible shit".. Its meant as a last-resort, its meant for the hitlers, not Bushes/Bidens of the world
> Why hasn't New Zealand had a Hitler?
Because New Zealand allows guns? In fact up to 2019 they had access to a pretty decent range of guns. Things got much stricter after 2019, but we spent a lot of that time in quarintine... so not much time for a Hitler to even rise to power, not to mention they still have access to guns (albeit far more restricted) so hardly the best example.
