It's hopefully a positive sign if it's related to the change of ownership elsewhere and even spammers are leaving that place
^-^

Is hard when overwhelmed but if you have a good way in place and even people are happy to delete accounts quickly then great...

Probably means transition and a big movement overall in the general sense which will have other blessings... if it's true more good will come from that :)

Big IF I guess but measurably you might be seeing lots of good users.

SIDE-NOTES / THINKING ALOUD IF INTERESTED
( SOME IDEAS / I'M DOING THIS )

- I'm doing 1 to 1 with population here and steps towards contacting each and every person as I see / find affinity with, naturally and by hunting them more actively (activism?) ! It is a little bit of a case of time and transparently getting to them to get past all this stranger danger stuff.
- I think it's good also because good old capitalism has been cutting out this people contact things and training (of self with others) is actually opening everything else up (communication bridges or at least practising rejection while maintaining my ground I'm not what they think I am and need to prove it to me and people willing to hold their ground, calm, with reasoning if it comes to that not to let people devalue others so easily or think that's the way to go for anything to progress)

- By asking them and myself questions directly people can end up talking with someone but also feel safe to test themselves a bit and inadvertently or not helps weed their own stuff out (what so you want / what do you hate) and even ourselves together to see what we're actually doing (this is mutuality which works in many ways) and alone 100% limited. So I opt for the more progressive even if naturally always hit and miss if that's accepted and not too disappointing for any active teacher or encourager (or whatever label)

- Instances / Hosts could help suggest what we can do right from the *beginning*. Seems really too much perhaps but depends how serious you are. In my mind there is no real way around it other than personalising life a bit and this is really rewarding and needed anyway whichever way you go.

-Put those memes and sentiments into personal action!

- Time to train needs to be set and put aside for any community (do you have a low-tech Jitsi Meet planned?)

- so ideally some demand / meetings online or more small deep questions in between does warm things up OR ELSE actually things die... or other things like Hollywood films and people timelines just eat their time.... and just more text bleh,.... just overwhelmed bad time consumption or overdoing it (so real relativity between people is needed and we are responsible as stewards on any level... and if someone asks us or provides space or demands then we as human provide! We fill the space- if not something like this happens
===>meh or non-motivation or "obviously it's not needed so why bother" or "ït's not fun because there is nobody to do it with me"
which is true for the most part...

- I'm interested in how you deal with spam or what you think, but probably be better to send me a DM about that.

END OF SIDE NOTES! :]

Expect not to learn everything in 1 session or sitting... can't blame people always for what needs persistance and progression...

More than 1 talk with someone is needed to understand what they say or the topic in question.
Often topics involve more things around it or component parts to it.

Pushing that is often pushing yourself which can be good but needs permission and balance with others if you're going to attempt to learn like that. In general finding a nice flow helps learning, not by crashing into things or emotionally saying but this... but that... see what the person is presenting more.

Expect not to learn everything in 1 session or sitting...

Often I tend to get the feeling that 10seconds is all people have and they feel I should be able to say it perfectly or they should get it perfectly (sending, receiving, interpretation). YES people can say it better but keeping your emotions as less of an ultimatum to learning is what REALLY HELPS another just continue to next sentence which might help or ask to jump in!

It's reassuringly normal to learn as you go along...

It's always good to think of it as on-going / evolving / incrementing process, and rewards are in various amounts naturally (not everything is equally rewarding but needs time either way).

Don't think badly if it's not clear at first, just know expecting a lot or putting too much focus on 1-shot kills can take away from the enjoying and coming back to revisit things and actually get best from it.

Often 1-shot or short understanding is missing a whole bunch of stuff,.. and that will 100% lead to more emotional things without understanding much at the end.

People who expect answers instead of "working on the problem myself" AS THE SOLUTION ITSELF... but on the other side WE EXCLUDE AVERAGE USERS SOMEWHAT AND THEN PERPETUATE OUR TROUBLES ALSO...

So people's limited understanding for me is testing when people expect outright answers instead of realising "working on the problem" IS THE SOLUTION ITSELF.
Especially around the problems of communicating things and improving relationships (in anything and measurably everything) there is no 1 shot kill (or sometimes it is but for example it puts into question further people's level of existing luxury or expectation do too tick 100 checkboxes in requirements when the whole reason something became bad was BECAUSE of what they used as a vector or split in our principles / understanding / etc)

The mentality or problem perspective I have with others is that they are so strongly not seeing their participation as the solution or thinking they can get away with not doing their own investigation that they too are actually part of the problem (or more politely "they are part of the equation in all of us finding a solution or better understanding") because it's a self-perpetuating loop somewhat to wait or expect others to do things. Waiting on others instead of working on it yourself IS THE PROBLEM.... especially if you can't stop doing what you don't understand but enjoy it too much to put down.
I guess users are the weak link in some respect.. and they take responsibility as well as those people who make it TOO EASY to use or WITHOUT EDUCATION.

In people's defence techie's (or better word) also put coding out of average persons reach simply by trade so it's true they can't do much SO we all need a way to on-board average folk somehow into the cycle or into stream ELSE WE EXCLUDE AVERAGE PEOPLE SOMEWHAT
AND THEN PERPETUATE OUR TROUBLES...

I don't have the answer BUT the above seems true that they or us need to all know what they are doing on some level... yes we could re-flash all devices and sell people better phones and laptops but also it helps for them to seek us out.

The naturally high-level skills do seems to exclude people but the idea is perhaps that it COULD BE HIGH ENOUGH 1 DAY to be simple and customisable eough for even those users - so techies do the hard work to make it FULL CIRCLE in simplicity and give control back to people SIMILAR TO HOW 1-CLICK INSTALLATION on servers work.

A MAIN PROBLEM IN COMMUNICATION
Instead of listening to one's component problems and accepting it's heavy or difficult etc, they end up saying "what are the solutions" and "if there is no alternative" then it's like case closed! That for me gives up the power of incrementing something or some other way... or closes the door based on a kind of ultimatum or too much of a extreme pendulum of "doing" this or that so progressing themselves in smaller constants seems better ( people making time for all these things is perhaps our challenge and what other teams are attacking to pass laws and tricks quickly in a short space of time).
It's expecting a lot to wait for things to become answered in 1 big answer and it's not the way things become big, it starts from small!
But yes it's also a reflection of the daily life templated to keep people busy and not at a neutral level or state of mind to even find these things to fix / read up on / debate.

Ideally not waiting until it's a mass accepted because it doesn't work that way and done in lots of small effort while others do the same and we use each others solutions.
First small steps then big!

Not once side has all the answers perhaps or there needs to be balance.

People are part of the problem
because they seem to be waiting or expecting others to fix things... their imagination in helping (technical or not) is also limited (not just their skills) and almost a kind of stagnation / sheep onlooking.

(though I appreciate the technical jump has also excluded them and Techies no longer talk to them much or need to talk to them) I think all these things can be address to adjust levels all round.

SUMMARY - Truth on both sides but I'm weighing things heavier on the lack of exploration asking questions or waiting for the next thing to complain about it instead of coming out punching things.

I'll re-edit this again but there are some main points here that are really big in realising and wording it even after all these years.

No more trying to circumvent WHAT IS ACTIVELY TRYING TO PUSH / KICK YOU OUT :p

@dpwiz If you mean you can't see the message, or it's blocked or one of the many techniques (like paywall etc) then I say

HOORAH... finally you and others might get the message...!

(I mean get the message like... well in terms of metaphorical allegiances / alignment / loyalty to own principles etc!)

So hope you get this message at least! Even with my terrible humour and playing with the word "message" I think it need for this occasionally/ nicely as mind massage so you can see the "doh!" in complaining !

Got the message? Stop trying?
Good!

No more trying to circumvent WHAT IS ACTIVELY TRYING TO PUSH / KICK YOU OUT :p

No more waiting for more BS tactics.

It's a bit of an inspirational joke / idea for others. I wouldn't be against it and think it would look good around physically and even as advertising for those that love Mastodon :)

Show thread

I'm not asking you to go evil - but I'm asking you to consider emulating bad tools in the right way...

Like advertising is not bad if we do it our way for our things I suggest other things we do for ourself too.

Using demonised things to get what we want is not natural to us but practising (at least in theory) our own advertising I think is healthy.

The other side obviously is hitting much harder with syndication (a kind of federating) which I think we can willingly enter or be more active in creating together advertising packages (even just a page listing relative video's to watch). This can be as simple as that or needs skill if it's more automated (like an algorithm).

I think if I accept to have open source advertised to me within the boundaries of what I subscribed to then that might be ok.

A lot of open critique should welcome but worst case scenario is perhaps switching it off or just having more people dedicated to feeding people what they want to watch... so I don't get distracted and keep it relative somehow in my life to find the holy grail I'm looking for (I'm not always sure what I'm looking for until you advertise it to me!!!)

Thoughts welcome.

Funkwhale Collective Update (this might help other projects in considering things too in the future)...

What I took from this reading (copy after) might be useful to consider or possibly learn in the future since other people's experience is good either way as it's either not easy or always subject to change (this might help projects in these respects below)

-organising; changes to legal containers
-maintainers changing etc
-money arrangement
-reading statutes
-lack of interest
-voting & membership
-managing assets

---------------------------------
Original here:
blog.funkwhale.audio/2022-asso
---------------------------------

Pasted below in whole with links also inserted here:

In June 2019, Funkwhale officially became an association. When the project started, Agate ran the project as a BDFL (Benevolent Dictator For Life). It became clear that this wasn't a very good way to run things, so she made the decision to formalize the collective.

Creating an official association (journal-officiel.gouv.fr/assoc) brought with it many benefits. It gave the project a written legal structure for decision making. It also presented a framework for handling memberships to give people voting rights. The association has been instrumental in shaping Funkwhale's democratic approach to development.

Things have changed a lot since the creation of the association.

- The original maintainers have stepped away from the project.
- A new project team has stepped up.
- The majority of the project team are no longer located in France.

As we work on the project more, our statutes sometimes feel more restrictive than helpful. In particular, the paid membership model for voters feels exclusionary. While it's possible to request a free membership, this isn't clear and can be embarrassing. Our statutes are also written in a very formal way that may be challenging for people to read. It's not an approach that a lot of people are used to.

Additionally, the running of the association is a lot of work. Making big decisions requires a lot of organization and planning. The handling of money and paperwork requires us to maintain a presence in France. And importantly, we aren't getting the amount of interest we need for new elections. This lack of interest recently led to us needing to change some of our statutes to accommodate limited interest.

We need to change something.

## What are you proposing?

After some discussion in our forums (forum.funkwhale.audio/d/10-leg),
we got in contact with the Center for the Cultivation of Technology (techcultivation.org/).
They are a non-profit that helps free software projects handle work outside of software development. They have offered to assist us with handling financial, administrative, and legal tasks. These are tasks that we find quite challenging to work on, especially as we are trying to build the software. We are quite interested in taking up this offer, but it would mean dissolving the association.

The association is currently responsible for donations and project administration. We can't continue as an association and hand these tasks over to the non-profit. If we decide to take this path, we'll dissolve the association and let the non-profit handle the administration.

## But what about members?

Members are currently able to vote on big decisions about the collective. This isn't something we can copy over to this proposed structure. This has made us think about what we currently use membership for and how we could improve it.

We would like to move to a more holistic view of membership. One that isn't based on money or any specific contribution. We'd like to move to a system that recognizes more people in our community and gives them a voice. Contributions take many forms, and we want to recognize all contributions equally. Code submissions, documentation, designs, translations, running and using the software. All these contributions are important and we should recognize this better. We can't do this with the association, and it leads to a somewhat exclusive environment.

Money collected through membership fees will be counted as donations and will still be used for the good of the project.

## Has this already been decided?

Not at all! The association members need to vote to make this decision. We're writing this blog post to let everyone know what's going on and what our position is on the topic. Of course, if the association votes to keep things as they are then they will stay as they are. That's what it means to be a democracy! 😄

We want to put this to a vote in a general assembly to formalize our response. If we decide to move away from the association, a general assembly vote lets us do that. We can start the process of dissolving the association and moving our assets over.

We'd like to open this discussion up on our forum (forum.funkwhale.audio/d/112-fu) to hear your thoughts on it. Once we've got an idea of everyone's feelings, we'll create a poll. Depending on the outcome of this, we'll look at what we do next.

Thank you for your continued support!

@robryk Got it thanks...
Seems plenty of options, but just some coding is needed and will / determination for going against such links as maybe sysops etc might actually use google them$elves and not care / want to change this relationship they have! (or they feel doing mail / storage themself is a hassle etc etc, many subtle reasons / comforts including the origins of internet coming from google so natural to stick with it until manually phased out or kicked off-boarded like a few places are going).

By the way anything else off-topic/related welcome since we covered that somewhat or happy to see what else you think.

Am probably going to re-write the picture and text for and take on board what you said:
qoto.org/@freeschool/108256186

Calling - some errors

- Getting errors loading [MathJax]/jax/output/HTML-CSS/jax.js while on non-Latex post (I think it's related to that)

- And also if you scroll my profile a post has some void space and garbled code from what seems to say Latex (I can't even see/get the post URL to give to you)

@robryk

- Ok, so how would you use boost in the private setting as you see it?

- Some good idea about the links, I took these points to be considered when debating this topic:
--"modifying messages... pretending to be from users"
--"modifying the messages that an instance's users see without their knowledge"
--a dialog box offering an option to users to see links modified in such a way when reading posts.

( that last note is excellent if it means leaving URL's as is and simply changing / giving option on-click to go to more friendly url - for example in an users options / preferences about reading such links)
