I've read in many, many places that multitasking reduces productivity, but I cannot seem to square that with my own experiences in research. When I am juggling between 2 and 5 projects with somewhat disparate aims and methods, I ALWAYS make rapid, sustained progress on the majority of them. As soon as I focus on one of them, I ALWAYS experience a dramatic slowdown in energy, productivity and satisfaction.
