Exactly 14 years ago , Satoshi Nakamoto designed the most pathetic / inefficient system ever invented by humankind : the blockchain.

Today, it weights 60 000 tons, wastes constantly 10 gigawatts .. to process less than 7 transactions per second :

Less than a 33 bps modem from 1990.

This could be joke if it didn't have such gigantic environmental impact, wasn't enabling billion dolllars ransomware industry and was not crushing thousands of lives in the process.

Comparing ATMs and blockchains is comparing oranges and apples.

An ATM is a physical place that gives you physical money. A blockchain is a digital thing that gives you digital money.

If you want to compare cryptos with something, you'll have to compare to digital payment services. We have already plenty of them, and usually are nearly instantaneous. And vastly more efficient than any blockchain will ever be.

Blockchain is a solution in search of a problem. And each time a problem has appeared to be solved by it, it has ended backfiring.

Ningún líder dura si no hace concesiones a diestra y siniestra.

Okay, we know... We made fun of Adobe when its cloud service went down. We've made fun of Corel Painter and Clip Studio. We joined in the protest No AI Generated Images protest. We made our stance on NFT's clear. But this is beyond making fun of. This is EW! EW! EW!

Universal mask wearing is not a lockdown. It’s the opposite: Mask mandates make society accessible to many more people, especially those at higher risk.

Generating HTML/DOM nodes and validation are the only kinds of functionality I see myself using isomorphic code for.

Since validation code without any server code usually is very short, I imagine most of isomorphic code is for HTML/DOM generation, in order to gain some performance or be able to serve a no-JS version without having to code it specifically.

But I have never used node.js on server, so...

HTTP is a protocol that yields one unique response for each request.

An option is WebRTC, but I don't think anybody sees that as a part the HTTP API world. It would be overkill, anyway.

The best way to do what you ask is to have 2 methods in your API, one for starting the process (returning immediately), and other for getting progress reports. You call the first once, and then the other periodically until it reports 100%. Of course, since any method ends at soon as it returns, you will need a way to run your operation as a separate process in your server; the way to do that is wildly different between different kinds of server.

There are some hacks that can be used if that's not an option, but they are the kind of hacks that make people managing servers really, really hate you.

Funny that most of the new interface features in W11 have been in Ubuntu since Unity days. Some even predate Ubuntu.

But, really, I don't care what W11 brings up.

Until I can arrange the taskbar to one side of the screen, Ubuntu style, I'm not upgrading. My laptop screen is short enough; with an horizontal taskbar it would be unbearable. And I really hate autohiding taskbars.

The article says that every porn site will have to verify age; it doesn't even mention any of them.

Given the huge number of sites in that category, I imagine soon there will be lists of sites not enforcing that law. People will not even need a VPN.

Is there any artist on Earth that isn't building upon the work of other artists, with no consent? Are AIs not based on the hard earned skills of thousand of software developers?

To be clear: I totally agree that those AIs should be trained using works authorized by creators only (or whoever they sell their rights to). But it is not a simple case of plagiarism. There is much more work involved than getting data and feed the machine.

On the other hand, there are entire social networks with legal terms that allow them to use your work to train AIs, usually implicitly. So even if the need to get creator's authorization were enforced, they would have plenty of training material anyway. And since any interesting style is mimicked by someone in some social network...

Seems the EU is falling like a house of cards, as brexiteers predicted. Except the only meaningful way our lives were affected by UK leaving is the lot of laughs we had reading the news. We were sad for them, but it was reeeally entertaining.
