The point is in Spanish we don't have gender-neutral pronouns at all. So the usual way to neutralize the old "Ellos" ('They'), or replacing it by "Ellos y ellas" or "Ellas y ellos". Which is tiresome, and makes you wonder if you should say first the feminine ("Ellas") or the masculine ("Ellos"). Same for adjectives or nouns, since they are gendered too.

It is a modern pain since 30 years ago nobody cared about gender-neutrality, so this was not an issue.

I'm all in for respecting all genders, but at the same time, I find difficult to believe that any of the proposed solutions for achieving it in Spanish is going to be successful.

@freemo @Amikke

Sometimes it is useful, for example, 'The blonde one' would be 'La rubia' if it is a girl, or 'El rubio' if it is a boy, so it can help avoiding ambiguity.

Is it worth the effort? Until modern times, I think so. Nowadays, it is getting more and more of a pain.

@Amikke @freemo

Funny. Both of your examples are exactly the same in Spanish (la muerte, el diente).

@freemo @Amikke

English speakers are lucky. In Spanish, gender appears everywhere. Even tables and forks have gender. If gender in pronouns is hard, try speaking a language in which all adjectives have gender.

It's not the only language with that kind of trouble; and it is very likely others have it worse; but it is the one I speak.

@pes_maravilla

@Richard_Littler

Our minds are made to seek explanations to everything, to the point that when something is important and we don't have a clue, we simply make up the answers.

Exactly the same as ChatGPT and its hallucinations.

@pes_maravilla

Believe me, that's something Spaniards love to do when on vacation.

It has to do with climate, good food, and better company.

@SindicalToday

You may remember a while ago, we asked people to visit a little web app that grabbed their viewport sizes.

We had an idea in mind for a visualisation and article that today, we've just pushed live.

The ideal viewport doesn't exist viewports.fyi/

@espanabizarra

@exchgr

Fads come and go. At least, Microsoft didn't jump into the crypto wagon. The space theme looks overblown and childish. What has that to do with code or AI?

It's likely one key reason for Microsoft buying Github was to have a very easy way to train their AIs on real code.

Move open source code to other venues would only make it a bit more expensive to do the same. And they could buy that other venues, too.

Maybe it's time the FSF or the EFF or the like creates a Github alternative.

@andysha

That would be the nuclear option. Seems unlikely, because it has no precedents, and it seems as a really huge risk for Google, since Youtube is accessed from many legacy or not easy updatable systems: Smart TVs, mobile apps, old phones Chrome doesn't support anymore...
Content creators and sites that embed Youtube videos would really hate it too.
It would be opening a door for rival platforms in a market where they have a monopoly. Very unwise.

@bil

Using less dependencies and bloat is always good. There are too many frameworks reinventing the wheel.

Seems a really interesting project.
