"Dear Sir, I'm here to sell you the perfect driver!"
"But... It is a gorilla! Does he know how to drive?"
"Don't worry! It already has all the features! You only need to provide him with our special Gorilla Driver's Manual!"
"Does it come with the gorilla?"
"Oh, we're still wrapping it! But we'll send it to you free of charge as soon as it is finished..."

Nah, who am I kidding?

@Argos_DeCore

@mcc

I don't think my case is typical, but maybe it can help establishing a boundary.

After years of updates and a lot of install/uninstalls, I have around 14GB for my Ubuntu system. And 13GB of snaps. And 2GB of flatpaks. And a lot of nonsense I should delete but I really don't have real motivation to; system is darn fast anyway. And I have a 100GB home which is a way better target for clean up when the disk gets full.

Next LTS might be a total reinstall. Much easier than clearing that mess. Or maybe not. We'll see.

@ichbindabomb

You can be more gentle (or cowardly) and mute them.

Or directly report them.

And no one should require an explanation from you.

I routinely unfollow people to avoid getting my Home timeline flooded. Have they done something wrong? Not at all. Sometimes it is they write a lot. Sometimes it is they write about something I'm not currently so interested. I keep them in lists to make them coming back when the tide changes.

Nobody asked why.

@iain_bancarz @GWillow
True. They can be 0.000000000000001, but they can't be really 0.

And that gets us to the Antropic Principle. But that's another story...

@GWillow

Well, that's what the Drake equation is for!
You only have to provide values to all the factors, do the math, done!

Trouble is: we don't know any of these values. We have a lot of estimations, but they are only guesses. And, since it is a multiplication, if only one of these factors is zero...

And no, it is not a dumb question at all. Quite the opposite.

@jaredwhite

New spec developments tend to kill old libraries.

Shadow DOM will need to get more developer friendly, or get new libraries for that, in order to kill current frameworks.

Or maybe there is a place for both worlds. Time will tell. There are still a lot of people using jQuery after all.

@jaredwhite

I totally agree that, if I were to try it again, maybe I would change my mind. But, since you ask...

My impression was it is intended more for widget library creators than for whole web app creators. I found it too cumbersome to make a MainPage component in a SPA, but perfect to make a reusable calendar widget.

On a typical app, once I have to use Vue for the MainPage, it is only natural to use it for the small widgets. Avoiding cognitive overload is very important, specially when you have coworkers who are not so skilled.

@leaverou

Sad news for me. I really would love to be able to use them with Vue.

Private fields are a godsend for maintainability, but are real troublemakers in most languages for serializing, proxying, unit testing...

Sigh.

@jaredwhite

I tried once to use the Shadow DOM and found it unpractical for my regular use; it seems a bit, I don't know, a bit low level for me. So I keep using Vue. I have a project where transpiling is not appropriate, so I use a BEM-like scheme for my CSS. And this new feature seems like a perfect fit for that.

Having choice is good when it doesn't break anything.

I see your point: giving unexperienced people a perfect way to harm themselves is a bad thing. But I think that boat sailed a long time ago. Web development has always had a long list of features seemingly tailored to shoot your own foot. And every year gets us at least a new one.

Maybe that's the reason of HTML5 success. No matter how awful your choices are, you can always follow them 🙈

Have you ever used `scoped` styles in JS frameworks, or pre-processors? What if scope was a core feature of CSS, aware of the cascade, and didn't rely on any special tooling?

@keithjgrant gives a great overview of the new `@scope` spec:

Patience. Getting used to a new keyboard takes time. You may end up preferring the new one quirks.

I would recommend you my keyboard, but since I hate the very idea of my keyboard having any kind of autocomplete, I don't think you would like it.

@doctormo @mcc

Inkscape is one of the first things I install when I install Ubuntu. But it lacks some features, which is very telling: I'm far from being a graphic designer.

I miss more programmer oriented features; I work a lot generating SVG on the fly or loading it and applying CSS classes to it, and Inkscape only gets me to the prototype phase.

I use it in Windows too; the Windows support is frequently even better than Ubuntu (I blame non-LTS and snaps).

It is a real pity Inkscape's development is not nearly as fast as other projects (Blender, for example). I assume is a lack of funding issue; I don't know why some projects got so much donations and others so few. Having strong corporate or non profit sponsor love seems a main point.

I wish you the best. We need a really strong open source vector drawing application, be it Inkscape or not.

@timoneda

Para eso se inventó Wikipedia.

O no.

Qué más da, si es de Netflix seguro que dejaron la historia cortada.

@doctormo @mcc

Open source on a non open source OS usually sucks, because nearly all open source developers develop for Linux or do multiplatform (web developers, mostly). More money would help, but, if you really are so much into open source that you are developing an open source desktop app, you're unlike to use Windows.

Of course, there are some kinds of open software that are especially bleak even on Linux, but each OS has areas where it is lacking. Anyway, things are getting real better, thanks to gems like the Steam client, Blender, or Godot.
