I can only have 10 Favorite domains. Where to fit all the other domains I am interested in?

Account settings > Follows and subscriptions > Domain subscribes > ADD NEW DOMAIN SUBSCRIPTION

I can choose to merge the feed from the domain into my Home feed, or any existing List feed, or add a new List feed for it. The new List option will create a List titled by the domain.

At first nothing will show, because this only subscribes to future toots, not past toots. To see past toots I still need to add the domain to your Favorite domains, or go to the site directly.

The Federated feed is a feed of domains chosen by my mods. With domain subscription I can build my own "federated feed" with domains I choose.

musk, twitter

The ongoing braindump by mr musk over on tw has illuminated aspects of conservative ideology. They think that:
-Journalists don't earn the mantle of truth-tellers, but are granted it by the powers that be
-Blue checks confer power, and those who confer checks do so to keep their own power in place
-The "mainstream media" is an interlocking conspiracy of self-perpetuating "elites" whose main goal is to block conservatives from getting power.

Exclusive from me: I spoke with the top Ukrainian official on the plot to take back Crimea from Russia—and she shared details on next steps:

-Some European officials have been warning her taking back Crimea could trigger Russia to retaliate, asking for compromise. She says that's a no go

-She's eyeing battlefield aspects of takeover, as Russia hints at possible retreat in Kherson

-Intelligence suggests a spring/summer takeover timeline, but she thinks it may be sooner

Can I import as a separate List instead of into my follow? On Twitter I can just subscribe to a published List.

Four days ago: huh this place is empty. Ooh I can follow three parked accounts

Yersterday morning: maybe 10% or so of the people I follow regularly on the bird site are here

Now: huh think it's fully half or more are here

It's a flood peeps. Never thought I'd see anything like it

Reminder that a knowledge graph of falsehoods can reach the same level of intricacy as truths. To that extent, is the effort for unwinding the false knowledge graph on top of building the true knowledge graph?

@overcode

I am happy that Mastodon has thrived behind the scenes, but I still can see no hope that it can scale up to be a competitor, as it has not surfaced at all in my circle if not for the Twitter saga. Even then, this emigration to Mastodon barely splashed beyond the tech and activist circle. As opposed to, e.g. Snapchat when it came out, and Tiktok.

Personally, I think this account will just be another brief attempt of mine. My attention is divided among work, Twitter, Discord, and occasionally Reddit already.

Concentration of email providers and clients means most users are not touching the "federated" part, and the federation continue to shrink.

@soller
I want to believe this good story. I've also barely convinced anyone with it.

I have tried to set up personal mail servers. Setting up a mail server had been quite technically challenging until recent years, requiring installing multiple components and tweaking configurations. After the technical hurdle, a new mail server has to overcome being considered spam by many existing servers. Then it has to overcome being spammed.

A plurality of businesses just throw the problem to Google and Microsoft. The trend is growing too.
“While self-hosted domains switched to providers across all categories, more than a quarter of them changed their mail provider to Google and Microsoft,”
today.ucsd.edu/story/IMC2021_s

The client side is worse. From, ironically, a spam sender's data, webmail is 99% Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook; mobile is 95% iOS and Android default.

"pick an with moderation you trust"
How? Did you systematically assess a list of moderation teams, went over their past enforcement behaviors, and came to a conclusion that you trust the mods of fosstodon.org specifically? If so, what was your procedure and how long did it take? Would you advise others to follow it?

"move your data wherever you desire and keep your network"
That's nice, but if a server has lost your trust to the point you are moving off, what happens to the data you left there? As trust is already lost, do you trust that the server would delete your account properly?

"your whole digital footprint is not mined for commercial gain here"
That's nice, but it can still be mined for spite or for surveillance. And what do you really mean by "here"? I am not on fosstodon.org, not that I think qoto.org is mining, but how large can "here" cover?

Again, sorry I am throwing out questions I don't have satisfying answers myself.

[Elon Musk’s First Move Is To Fire The Person Most Responsible For Twitter’s Strong Free Speech Stance](techdirt.com/2022/10/28/elon-m)

> Gadde did more for free speech on the internet than almost anyone else I can think of. It is difficult to overstate how important she has been in protecting free speech over the past decade. This post will only brush the surface of some of what she’s done.

> Twitter kept on experimenting with new methods of handling trust & safety that were less restrictive than banning people entirely. It was among the first, for example, to introduce fact checks and “more information” boxes.

> unlike almost any other internet company I can think of, Twitter has embraced the fact that anonymity is protected by the 1st Amendment to fight in court over and over and over again against attempts to reveal anonymous users’ identity.

> When it comes to pushing back against governments and their attempts to crack down on speech, Twitter’s record is undeniably stronger than just about any other company.

> Even as we speak, one of the biggest free speech cases facing the Supreme Court this term has Twitter as a party. But Musk just fired the company’s two top legal executives who were responsible for filing the cert petition to get the Supreme Court to hear the case.

> Gadde leaving Twitter is [...] a loss for free speech for all of us.

@soller You can because you are powerful enough to begin with: your technical know-how, your income to cover keep-up, etc.

I invite you to think:

For someone who cannot, on what shall they base their trust in a Mastodon server?

How is that different from Twitter?

I don't have a satisfying answer myself, despite having tried various open alternative SNSes. I believe these are hard questions essential to creating a better SNS in the future. So I ask out of sincere respect.

@soller
Federation is still the Worst of All Worlds
pseudorandom.resistant.tech/fe

TLDR: "Federation results in the data of people being subject to the whims of the owner of the federated instance." "while gaining none of the benefits of scale and discovery that centralized systems provide."

Then there is The Limits to Digital Consent
members.newdesigncongress.org/

TLDR: Our research finds that current attempts to cultivate informed consent into data-driven systems likely fall short of their stated goals due to a host of issues including insufficient understanding of the power dynamics inherent to organizational politics, network complexity at scale, political accountability, and the second- or third-order effects of different designs of local-first data strategies.

Remember that you can mute someone for a fixed amount of time.

Is someone posting about something you don't really wanna see in your feed right now? Boosting too much? Generally making you anxious?

You can mute someone for a few hours or days, after which they'll show up in your feed again.

There's a lot of new people joining right now and if all the new energy is making you a bit stressed or anxious, don't be afraid to mute people for a while 💚🌻🍂

@cgranade Reality is, most people and communities are in walled gardens: Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Snapchat, Discord, Telegram, Tiktok. I've tried various open alternatives: IRC, XMPP, Signal, Matrix, Mastodon, Zulip, BitMessage, ZeroNet. It's not that I have never tried imagining. But it has always ended up felt like retreat instead of advance; preserving an inner circle instead of reaching out to who needs help. Good luck keeping your hopes up.
