@otyugh @bobpony I don't see anything bad in ads per se, as long as they are not intrusive and are actually useful to me as a user. To me this is a valid model to make software sustainable.

Having said that, as the sources of your quote indicate, the feature is optional on Ghostery and even when enabled by users, it does not send your data to their servers.

Increasing use of #FacialRecognition cameras in public will mean none of us are invisible. Your local council, the Home Office, the police, retailers, the pub landlord. They all may be able to ID you.

"Going anywhere for the holidays?"
"Yes, upstate."
"Plane or car?"
"Oh Jesus no! Train."
"How long will that take?"
"9 hours. But my vacation starts when I get on the train, not when I get off the plane. It's much less stressful."
"You know... I can see that..."

Folks, I may have a made a convert today. Let's be real. Driving is work, and flying is torture. A train ride, might seem "long" but did you count all the time you spend getting to the airport, the security checks? The silly rules?

@ceoln not in your posts and replies? I've never had this situation

The decline of local newspapers accelerated so rapidly in 2023 that analysts now believe the U.S. will have lost one-third of the newspapers it had as of 2005 by the end of next year — rather than in 2025, as originally predicted.

@johncarlosbaez of course approximating powers of 10 with powers of 2 is the same as approximating powers of 5 with powers of 2, simply because 10=5*2 and the twos cancel out

Is intellectually implausible, politically extreme, and morally abhorrent stuff being said on college campuses? Of course! We are talking about millions of people, an extremely diverse environment.

But that does not mean that campuses are dominated by dangerous extremism. 8/

In Defense of My Students

The idea of the campus as a stronghold of leftwing extremism and authoritarian censoriousness stands in stark contrast to what’s happening inside the classroom.

@Dseitz @tzimmer_history the best thing about these "establishment" outlets is that they are behind a paywall

@hexxy_the_grouch @bobpony and use the Firefox containers extension. I only use alphabet apps in an alphabet container, meta container for meta, and so on.

@harold @pettter being able to control pedal assist has been the key attracting force for me. Thanks

@grrrr_shark @Zeb_Larson just an hour ago I unfollowed the three most active accounts I followed. These people were retweeting so much they flooded the rest. And of course, someone doing so much, tends to be too focused on a single topic

@inquiline @Zeb_Larson @Chanders thanks for reminding me about this. At the end we do have ingredients for an algorithm, so probably don't need an actual (self-managed) algorithm

@Chanders @inquiline @Zeb_Larson isn't this a case for the development of user-controlled algorithms where one should be able to control how their feed gets filtered and enhanced, call it an open user model if you like?

@pettter @harold mine is also ~10km and I am fine with a non-electric bike. Have you considered this option and could you share some pros/cons? In my case I care more of the exercise than of the actual commute, as I can also travel by metro train.
