@kristinHenry apologies for interfering as an outsider, but what are CWs?
@GregCocks quite obvious to anyone who's observed the trees in a forest, but still impressive they managed to measure this
@topepo when you talk of tabular data, do you consider that this is only a form that could have very different meanings? E.g. both relational (linked multi-tabular) and CSV (untyped) are tabular. Then, beyond the typical number series stats, there is also ordinal, categorical and nominal data. Would you consider that applying general statistics on such tabular data is implicitly performing transformations that might require quite sophisticated analysis as justification? These are questions relevant to data that you might consider to be tabular, but they are not about the circumstance that it was decided to represent the data in a table.

@Gargron is it generally the case that mastodon.online is the experimental instance where new features might be rolled out earlier?
@ForfarFairLady @Gargron there's no software without algorithms. Si the thing is not whether there should be algorithms, but what they should do and how they should do it. As pointed out before, the recommendation feature has been there already
@tripplehelix @Gargron even if you have an outstanding mechanism to select your silo, it still remains a silo. I agree on the positives, but there are also negatives to it
@Twitter_expat @Gargron well, one mechanism does not exclude the other. If you don't like it, it's easy to ignore it. But I would appreciate recommendations that would expand my worldview.
At the University of Milan we are seeking a research fellow to participate in the “MetaLing Corpus: Creating a corpus of English linguistics metalanguage from the 16th to the 18th century” project:
https://expertise.unimi.it/resource/project/PRIN202223AANDR%5F01
Through archival research and corpus compilation, the project aims to assess the genres and text-types involved in the circulation of linguistic knowledge, and to throw light onto unconventional texts and voices besides the major works and figures on which scholarship has naturally concentrated. The project is divided into three phases 1) collection of texts, 2) building the corpus, 3) lexical extraction and database creation, combining human and computational tools. The core part of our study will involve the analysis of the terminology, discursive strategies and descriptive metaphors used to describe and compare languages in English, in diachronic perspective.
The successful applicant will work with the project team to identify relevant primary materials and build an electronic corpus of texts. The post is for someone with a postgraduate degree in Linguistics, English, Computer Science or related discipline. Candidates may or may not have a doctorate at the time of application. The researcher will have the opportunity to contribute to the project database, work in archives, and develop academic writing in individual and joint papers.

@triptych I guess random videos would reveal the crap average of content they pride themselves with
@Nonya_Bidniss @futurebird actually helping out with some form of local analysis is extremely helpful. Much appreciated
Sometimes, the best way to protect a replanted forest is to log some of it.
New research from Smithsonian Institution scientists shows that paying people who replant tropical forests with some of the timber has benefits for both #ClimateJustice and the ecosystem, as it can lead to longer-term sustainability as participants feel a sense of pride and responsibility for the project’s success.

This strategy of silencing criticism has extended into the digital realm, with X CEO #ElonMusk’s platform playing a pivotal role in the Indian gov’s transnational repression. At the Indian government’s behest, Musk’s platform deleted hundreds of posts sharing a #BBC documentary exposing Modi’s role in a 2002 anti-Muslim massacre that unofficial estimates indicate as many as 2,000 lives.

@Sustainable2050 in such a fractured political system, being the largest doesn't necessarily lead to having a majority. However, other parties don't seem to have issues with the anti-constitutional stances and this is the part that I'd appreciate if anyone could explain to me.
@throsby @freemo I think there's research on how people care about conflicts that are in some way closer to them. In particular, last year I've seen graphs showing how European media wrote incomparably more about Ukraine than about Syria. To some extent it makes sense to care more about "local" conflicts.
However, when it comes to external interference to stop violence, there are no local actors ready to interfere. Even worse, the UN's blue helmets are practically non existent anymore. One of the so many reasons the UN needs to be reformed, particularly the security council.
@walsonde @dansup @pixelfed is this the article you are so kindly trying to point me to? https://www.jurist.org/commentary/2022/10/canada-quianna-morality-police-arbitrary-practices/
