What’s the primary way you access Mastodon? (Please boost to extend reach.)

the content/information rot online since the advent of "AI" a year ago is so real. yesterday when I was searching the internet for reminders on how to do a purl stitch, so many of the top results were random webpages with AI generated instructions that were completely useless. most had no images at all, just a bunch of text, but one even had a couple of (equally useless) pictures!

I hate how hard it's become to find reliable information online these days! It was already getting harder prior to this for other reasons, but AI content has really accelerated the problem.

I used to think "why bother having reference books for non-expert-level information when I can just find that info online in moments about anything I want" but I am starting to change my position on that. maybe I DO need reference books actually.

The funny thing about LLMs is they’re not good for knowledge work because they sometimes make up stuff that doesn’t exist and they’re not good for creative work because they sometimes make up stuff that does exist.

Anyone know of a program at a university or college where Linux laptops are available for students to check out and use, similar to what you might see for Windows and Mac devices?

Or maybe it's a single Linux desktop in a computer lab?

Has anyone tried this? Are there any IT admins who work at schools who could provide input?

As any community, the Fediverse is full of myths that exist for the single reason that vocal people have an agenda, and others can't be bothered to fact-check. One such myth here is "quote tweets are toxic". Debunked! Thank you @QOTO for being better than so many others

It's been a minute, so here's your reminder that the claim that "quote posts are mostly toxic" is untrue and has been roundly debunked. absolutelym...

Western Japan has been shaking nonstop for two and a half hours now. I don't think this has ever happened before anywhere.

Списъкът ми с български ActivityPub сървъри с отворени регистрации още се държи храбро. Дори трябва да добавя Blewsky, защото тогава го нямаше: petertoushkov.eu/bulletin/kakv

По населеност:

masto.bg/about
bg.cafe/about
bgmastodon.com/about
bgtooter.social/about
hapyyr.com/about

Знаете ли дали има нови български места освен тези? Искам да напиша нова статия (тази е от преди половин година), но още обмислям с какво би била полезна.

Wikimedia Russia has been dissolved.

The general assembly of Wikimedia RU decided to disband the organization after it was made clear to the president, of Wikimedia RU, who works as an as an assistant professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University, that he was to be classified as a "foreign agent".

Closing Wikimedia RU was done to protect the (now former) members of the non-profit organization that supports Russian Wikipedia.

I needed to understand the angles on Threads federation in a more rigorous way, so I took a few days to think through and write up my sense of the benefits, risks, and available risk mitigations, along with loopholes that need closing and questions to discuss with fediverse administrators.

This is a blisteringly hot subject for me, so it's hard to keep my head cool enough to understand other people's trade-offs, but I'm trying.

It's almost Public Domain Day! This year, there's a lot of hype about a certain mouse entering the public domain, but to be clear Steamboat Willie is going into the public domain. The newer versions of Mickey Mouse are still protected by copyright & trademark.

There are a whole host of other cool things going into the public domain on January 1st. More information about the works entering the public domain can be found @ the Center for the Study of the Public Domain.

To anyone out there hosting a server of any scale, interested in connecting with the QOTO matrix server?

What I am proposing is I will add any Matrix server on the fediverse into our configuration under room directories on the condition the other server adds QOTO as well. This wont change anything functionally except to allow the server to show up int he drop down for matrix servers when searching for servers to join. It just makes sense to have the various fediverse servers show up in that list by default.

@QOTO

So I setup a list of maybe 30 highly active matrix rooms organized into Matrix Spaces on the QOTO Matrix server (though you can access them from any spaces enabled matrix server).

Just login to your existing matrix account on any server, or register for a free one at element.qoto.org (registration open to everyone). Then join any of the following spaces (make sure you turn on spaces in your config under labs first).

Please let me know if you have any rooms you'd like to suggest to be added to any of the below spaces. Also, feel free to create your own space and share it.

:qoto.org - Rooms related to QOTO itself

:qoto.org - Various rooms from matrix servers that have a fediverse hosted as part of the same community.

:qoto.org - A collection of general topic STEM rooms like Electronics, Physics, Math, etc.

:qoto.org - Rooms specific to Countries, towns or regions around the world.

:qoto.org - Channels for various open-source projects

-distros_space:qoto.org - Rooms for various linux distribtuion flavors.
