Big thread on Mastodon links being blocked on Twitter. Basically, it’s not the link - it’s text mentioning Mastodons paired with any link (even a link about something with no mastodons).
Specific phrasing matters and, notably, some obvious phrasing is not filtered out in a way that makes me question whether this is intentional on Twitter’s part.
This: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/480529/datacentres-in-nz-pm-s-office-rejects-oia-request-on-briefings-over-plans actually makes me extremely angry. Our Gov't is protecting the (dubious) 'commercial interests' of foreign corporations who have an exploitative relationship with our country, pay little-to-no-tax, refuse to abide by our legislation in many cases, and hold huge amounts of our citizens' data off shore. And the Gov't is doing this *in preference* to working Aotearoa-based and owned tech businesses, whose services they've actively snubbed for decades.

@warren__terra @Popehat I see.
COVID-19 has erased two decades of life expectancy growth in the US. Yet, leaders are still trying to gaslight us into believing that the US had one of the best responses to the pandemic.

I've long said that Twitter's character limit is way too small, and I've also long seen that Fediverse and Mastodon are fine with instances having very high limits. (My current instance has over 16 times Musk's new limit, for example. We also have Markdown for text formatting)
*That being said*, Twitter is not Fediverse, where there's a history of posts of all different sizes going around. People are used to the small character limit, and are averse to anything that would change it. Going from 280 to 4000 in one go — rather than an incremental approach or even collapsing longer texts by default *à la* Octodon Social --- is going to be a culture shock to existing users.
Plus, I'm pretty sure Musk isn't going to implement Markdown anytime soon. I'm not even sure he knows what Markdown is! Why waste $8/month for 4000 characters on a desperate billionaire's dying platform when you can sign up to Qoto (or if you don't like that for some reason, a Pleroma, Misskey, or Akkoma instance) and get more characters *and* versatile text formatting for free?

@mattblaze There are other Fediverse servers that have QTs. Heck, my instance has QTs because it's a Mastodon fork.

You know this Elon guy really spends an uncomfortable amount of time accusing others of being pedophiles for someone who has multiple pictures with Ghislaine Maxwell.
@Popehat These people, as my father likes to say, "have way too much time on their hands".
When he says that, he means that as an insult. It means they have nothing better to do with their time for whatever reason except to waste it on stupid, petty things.
Year-on-year activity on Twitter's ad manager platform fell by 85%
The Wall Street Journal reports that activity on Twitter's ad manager platform, which hosts those who create or monitor ad campaigns, "declined nearly 74% in October from a year earlier, according to the firm’s data. In November, visits fell 85% on the same basis—the largest ad traffic decline since Twitter’s change of hands." https://twitterisgoinggreat.com/#year-on-year-activity-on-twitters-ad-manager-platform-fell-by-85percent
Elon's treatment of former Twitter trust and safety head Yoel Roth
Musk's comments have this insidious nature where they suggest that people who work in this field must surrender their humanity. They should not have public feelings or make public comments. They should not be engaged politically. Otherwise, they are biased. This chain of thoughts dehumanizes us.
Musk is throwing Roth to a pack of uneducated wolves, and will shrug his shoulders if something bad happens. Unacceptable.
I've been on #Mastodon just over a month. I genuinely did not anticipate how incredibly high the level of *useful* engagement from great people would be. Absolutely fascinating. Thanks. -L
@kissane The ongoing death of Twitter has made people turn back to the older parts of the Web, and in my opinion, it's about damn time.
