Why do high-effect size instructional strategies endure over time? They do so because they have a growing body of research that reveals their efficacy in accelerating student growth. When we use technology to make learning relevant to real life, we amplify the impact of strategies that work. When relevant, use it. When not, skip the tech.

No seas garca y no hagas esas mierdas. Si alguien te desagrada, sólo bloquealo.

5. La federación hace muy fácil construir espacios seguros. Cualquier instancia puede bloquear a usuarios o instancias que considere repulsivos. Pero tené cuidado, su sos muy purista te podés quedar solo o rodeado de personas iguales a vos.

Enchant your ears! Looking for some awesome stories to enchant your ear? Then you've come to the right place! I need content that's going to make my blood boil, make me laugh outright, and keep me engaged. For those of you who still think (as I once did) that audio isn't as good as reading text, make sure you read the research section at the end of this blog entry! mguhlin.org/2017/12/enchant-yo @bookstodon

I seldom listen to #audiobooks, but during a phase when I was doing a long commute twice a week the were invaluable - I listened to classics that I would not have otherwise had time for, i.e. Paradise Lost, Canetrbury Tales, etc.

But the best of the lot was The Prince (Machiavelli) which was read by Ian Richardson (at the time fresh from House of Cards) so well that even though I actually knew the book, I gained greater insight than before - just brilliant

Incendiary Speech That Spurs Violence is Rising in US, But Tools Exist to Shrink It bit.ly/3tPsMru

Electronic mail is so confusing. Why do I need to choose a provider and how do I get even decide? And once I have an address, how do I find my friends’ addresses and send them letters? Will I only be able to send letters to people using the same provider?

Trying to work out what the good kinds of allyship are in a federated place.

It's already obvious that the responsibility of dealing with toxic/racist/ableist/sexist environments is being pushed to the people affected by them.

If you're creating a toxic space and gatekeeping norms, now is a good time to stop doing that and have some grace when you're called out.

But that's not enough.

Imagine being a "free speech absolutist" publicly firing people who exercise free speech. 🙄

In case you missed it, here's last week's comic illustrating the history of #Twitter in four panels:

"It's a terrible thing,
I think,
in life to wait until you're ready.
I have this feeling now
that actually no one is ever ready to do anything.
There is almost no such thing as 'ready'.
There is only 'now'."

I wonder if many of the new members of the Fediverse, for whom this might be their first conscious experience of #FOSS, will a) compare the polish on various Fediverse apps unfavourably to those they used to use for Twitter, & then b) think of that old story about the pigs marvelling at how well the farmer fed and looked after them... Noting that, c) Twitter probably had 1000-10000 times more $ invested in it than the Fediverse, by folks expecting massive returns.

With #FOSS, I'm always struck by how much is achieved for so vanishing little financial investment. Usually it's just someone who wants to try out an idea... and maybe improve their software development chops. I'm not aware of many (or any!) FOSS projects that started with a financial motive. At most, they seem content with sustainability.

another take on Meta and Tax Preparers

Major tax-filing websites secretly share income data with Meta

some of the biggest online e-filing services—unbeknownst to millions of users—have been sharing sensitive user financial information with Meta. Some services linked user names and email addresses with detailed information like income, refund amounts, filing status, and even the amount of dependents’ college scholarships.
