If you divide your students into groups of 5, 5, 5, and 4, inevitably two students from the 4 group will drop the class.

I am reminded of this line (maybe from one of the Bulwer-Lytton contests?):

"Oh shit, it's the end of the world," he said, missing his last chance to prove that he knew the difference between scatology and eschatology.

I'm seeing ads for an @hbomax series about Heaven's Gate, as if the news isn't already full of apocalypses and people dying because of detached-from-reality cults.

Everyone: @AOC is selling a "tax the rich" sweatshirt for $58! That's way too expensive.

Me, a former mass market apparel designer: Made in America. Union printed. Sounds about right. That's what it costs to pay everyone a decent wage along the way.

Odds are you’ll never encounter a black hole, but it never hurts to be prepared. A new book offers a “survival guide” to black holes as a means to help people understand these enigmatic objects. buff.ly/3mBAyzX

I begin each morning by looking at Twitter on my phone, then on my laptop, then on larger and larger screens throughout the day, like a sunflower blooming.

What is a "guest"? Well, in the beforetimes...

The richest 1% own half of the stock market.

The bottom 50% own 0.7% of it.

This is why the corporate class is willing to let you die for the Dow.

I had to hang up @htdrake's @plumdeluxe tea advent calendar, which involved suspending a dowel. Thanks to the @PortlandBEM NET knot tying class, I knew to use a clove hitch.

Man, @TheElliotPage did this, too? That guy is like the new @DrBrianMay.

Just had an eye-opening teaching experience.

Don't show them code and explain it to them. Show them code and make them explain it to you.

The serving size on a kosher dill pickle spear is 2/3 of a spear (seriously?), but it's 0 calories so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This seems tangentially related to @liz_stanhope's work.

A friend’s grandma got covid (she’s recovered)

How did she get covid? She’s been sneaking off to karaoke bars that are covertly operating illegally, w/o covid precautions.

Illegal. Underground. Grandma. Karaoke Bars.

Am I disappointed? Amazed? Losing my mind? All of the above.

In 1842, Joseph Geefs made a sculpture of Lucifer (left) for St. Paul’s Cathedral in Liège. It was removed because it was ‘too sublime’ and people thought it would distract girls from the sermons. It was replaced by the sculpture on the right. (📷: Georges Jansoone / Luc Viatour)
