The entire process of selecting our president has become so fraught, divisive, and arbitrary that it threatens the foundation of our democracy.

How do we fix this? By making the Electoral College irrelevant.

Here’s one way to do that. robertreich.substack.com/p/how.

Just published some brand new content! Created two videos for the wonderful #MaglevMetro

First link is the 3 minute BURST version:

Next is the standard length, more in depth video where I go over each action and play a few sample rounds so you can see how the game works:

We cruised on into our D weeks with Drive.

Super simple, push your luck, set collection. It's been rethemed quite a few times, but I really like the artwork on Drive. It's another good choice for brains that are tired or under the weather.

I first learned to play at our local board game convention. I happened to have some free time, and they happened to need another player to fill out a tournament table, so I joined in and was charmed.

Huh. I went to update my project to the latest stable version before the software development students start working on it. Surprisingly, the latest "long term support" version is 2021.3.18f1.

I was delighted to discover Julie Czerneda's writer origin story in the December issue of Locus Magazine. One of the best I've ever encountered!

Here's our (probable) final C tally for . * indicates games I played without @htdrake, + indicates games she played without me.

Carcassonne
Cheeky Monkey
The Climbers

+Concordia

*Castell

Crokinole (x3)
The Castles of Burgundy: The Dice Game

Tomorrow we move on to D!

DIRECT MESSAGING

DMs on Mastodon work differently than on other platforms.

Graham Cluley, a well-respected British security blogger with a sharp sense of humor (and host of the Smashing Security podcast) has this to say:

“Imagine you are having a direct message conversation with someone on Mastodon about a sensitive subject.

Maybe George and Paul are bantering via direct message on Mastodon, and one of them says “I’ll tell you who’s a twit. That bloody @Ringo”

Well, because @Ringo has been mentioned in the chat, he now sees a copy of the message too. Ouch, that’s awkward.

This would be particularly dangerous if you were communicating with another Mastodon user to report abusive behaviour. Suddenly your abuser knows you are complaining about them.

Email doesn’t work like that. Twitter direct messages don’t work like that.

(Sorry Ringo for using your name in this example, Peace and Love man!)”

Marcus Hutchins pointed out -- in his excellent overview “A Twitter User's Guide to Mastodon”:

“Something to also be wary of is similar to how Twitter staff can read your DMs, so can Mastodon instance staff. If you send a DM to someone on another instance, both the staff on the sending and receiving instance could read your message if they wanted to. Just like on any social media platform, I do not advise using DMs to share sensitive information. Use DMs for normal discussions, or exchanging contacts. Any sensitive information should be sent via an End-to-end encrypted messaging app like Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, or Wire.”

the boy who cried wolf would be a way cooler story if actual wolves came out of his eyes

The birds have found the new brick of suet. I'm glad the little ones got a chance at it before the flickers and European starling show up. They're such bullies!

When a car is repaired after a crash, the GDP goes up.

When a fruit or vegetable is grown only to be thrown out by a supermarket as food waste, the GDP goes up.

When you replace a phone that still works because of planned obsolescence, the GDP goes up.

When you throw out a perfectly good coat because it's no longer fashionable, and buy a new one in this season's style, the GDP goes up.

When a bridge has to be replaced because it wasn't built right, the GDP goes up.

When a piece of packaging is manufactured only to be thrown away straight away, the GDP goes up.

When a site needs to be decontaminated because chemicals weren't stored correctly, the GDP goes up.

In each case, society has no more usable wealth than it would have had if the car didn't crash, the vegetable wasn't grown, the phone wasn't replaced, the old coat was still being worn, there was less packaging, or the chemicals were stored correctly. Yet the GDP goes up.

Meanwhile, most of the wealth that is generated ends up in the top one percent's pockets.

The truth is that GDP isn't a useful measurement. It's just a convenient one.
