@maxim When I have to decipher code that wasn't written (a) by me and (b) in the last two days.

The advantage of using Unity is the large community of users who can provide quick answers to questions.

I did it! I made an epicycle clock!

Men at Work is a dexterity game that I think I like watching more than I like playing.
I've only played it about half a dozen times. Every time it has ended not because someone collected sufficient Employee of the Month points, but because everyone else loses their safety certificates. Thinking back, I'm not sure I've seen anyone survive long enough to earn Employee of the Month...
@Joel @beeoproblem We may never know. There was a GameObject that appeared (in the scene Hierarchy) in one version but not another. We have no idea how this could happen when we had the same scene and prefabs.
*teammate reports a bug*
Hmm, that doesn't happen on my machine. Have you pulled the latest version of main? Yes?
What's commit number are you on? Yes, that's the one I'm on.
Do either of us have any unstaged changes? No?
Other teammate, does this happen for you? No? Okay, it's just the one person.
Try restarting Unity.
Reboot your computer.
Okay, delete the entire repository, re-clone it, and open that in Unity.
THAT fixed it.
@futurebird @kechpaja Aside from the effectiveness, it's the flooding that annoys me. It's hard to get anything done under the constant firehose of ads. Web search has becoming drastically less useful in the last few years.
There's also a line between people talking about their thing on their own feeds and companies paying to staple ads to your eyeballs. The lack of the latter is what makes Mastodon so much nicer than corporate social media.
@ingalls Have you seen what happens if you put a cell phone in a microwave?
Reminder that the only safe dummy domains to use are:
- example.com
- example.net
- example.org
- example.edu
And nowadays there's also a safe dummy TLD: .example
These are safe because they are reserved by IANA as as special-use domain names for documentation purposes.
Any other domain can be registered and as such should _never_ be used as a dummy domain for documentation or as eg. an example in default configs.
I am absolutely gobsmacked by the journalistic achievement that @mozilla pulled off with their mental health, prayer, and lifestyle app audit.
Highly worth a read if you are like me and live in the orbit of these trendy app-based therapy services.
@LouisIngenthron There's a lot of discussion around this point. There's certainly a risk that, if we keep doing things the way we have been, some students will use LLMs to cheat in CS1/CS2, then be stuck in later classes: the LLM can't solve the problems and the students haven't developed an understanding of the fundamentals.
That said, learning to read (and then to test and debug) code *could* be a useful step in learning to write code.
Just watched an ACM webcast on teaching computer science with tools like Copilot.
The profession of software development isn't about to go away, but it's going to change rapidly. What we teach may also need to change (just as we no longer spend much time on assembly language).
I am concerned that we may be on a path to paying a corporation to use stolen code (and burn a bunch of carbon) to solve our problems.
If you are a white leftist and you talk “both parties are the same they are both capitalist” you will loose most of your black audience. I think it ought to be obvious that this isn’t because blackfolks love Democrats (in most cases, there is always someone being simple in any group) —no. it’s because the difference between the parties is material and obvious and these are unstable times.
When I hear such talk I wonder if the speaker is working on voter suppression.
