Was driving in to work when I saw this 50-foot tree fall over. Fortunately it didn't land on anyone.

I have a big request for feedback. I'm part of an NSF-funded project building games to teach people about earthquake preparedness. We're in the brainstorming / planning stage for the third game, and I'd love input from people here. Here's a document describing the unusual design challenges:

Them: How was your weekend?

Me: Tiring! I finally put in all that Waynescoting I've been meaning to do!

Them: Ha! It's not “Waynescoting”! It’s “wainscoting”!

Me: ... Well, shit.

@LouisIngenthron That wouldn't be a "three-course meal".

I don't *think* regular canned food lasts as long, but I may be wrong.

NEW: 65% of Americans want to elect the president by popular vote rather than via the Electoral College system.
82% of Democrats & 47% of Republicans favor this change.

@barubary A mathematician colleague tells a story of a student who was having trouble understanding functions. After several rounds of "this makes sense, but that doesn't", it became clear that the student didn't realize a function name could be more than one letter long.

On a related note, a pet peeve of mine is the use of a lower-case L as a variable name. I ran across one "introductory" textbook that, in the first chapter, had *five different variables* with this name, each in a different font!

Trying to order sandwiches for lunch. The Subway app, which is updated every week under the bizarre belief that what customers want is "more gamified achievements while ordering food", informs me that the shop two blocks away is not accepting orders. It offers to help me find another restaurant, and opens a map centered on ... Spain. (The previous restaurant is in Portland, Oregon.)

I've won the last three board games of galactic conquest I've played: Twilight Imperium, Space Base, and Space Empires 4X. I think I like the last best, because maneuvering the fleets (rather than managing the empire or climbing the tech tree) is the interesting part to me.

Here is a short demo of Eloquent, a new text editing prototype I was working on at Google that attempts to fix this issue:

@scottjenson @Brendanjones My eyes would glaze over, but for the opposite reason: I think it's hopeless. When I see something like "this game was developed on an iPad", I think, "WHY?!"

I want all the screen real estate I can get and touch screens are a tool of the Devil.

All that said, it looks like you're doing good work making the mobile experience less miserable!
