@aebrockwell Yes -- handily, I have a fast SSD (to boot up the Windows side quickly for gaming) and a larger actual hard disk (for long work sessions on the Linux side).

I have closed Twitter and deleted the app from my phone. Now I need recommendations on who to follow here. I am interested in #climate, #energy, #airquality, #sustainabledevelopment

@rjsheperd I tried it a while back and found it insufficient. Windows programs can't see the Linux "side", so you'd need a complete set of Linux applications (desktop, web browser, IDE, etc.). Running Windows at the same time feels like it would be a waste of resources.

Am I wrong? My opinion isn't deeply informed.

I have a Windows box that I use pretty much only for gaming. I'll be working from home for the next year (sabbatical), so I plan to use this machine rather than my less powerful MacBook Pro.

Windows is not suitable for actual work, so in one week I plan to install Ubuntu (dual boot).

One of the creepier tech-related incidents I remember was many years ago when I wanted the Sam's Photofacts (a third-party creator of device specs and schematics, etc.) for a very old portable TV. Way out of date, but I was trying to help someone with it.

I mentioned to a friend that I was looking for old Photofacts, but I did not say anything about the TV. He scribbled an address on a scrap of paper, an address locally here in L.A. "Try him," he muttered.

I drive over. It's a small unmarked storefront. I go in, the bell on the door rings. Sitting inside, like the caterpillar in "Alice in Wonderland", is this little guy perched on a stool, with immense stacks of paper surrounding him everywhere. Total mayhem.

I walk up to him -- knowing that this was a waste of time and really wanting to get out of there -- and asked if he had the Sam's Photofacts for that specific very old TV model.

Without saying a word, he reached over to the pile of papers right next to him, took the TOP item off the pile, and silently handed it to me. It was the ancient one I needed. Stunned, I paid him the amount marked on the item, and left with it, not completely sure what had just happened.

When I drove by there a month later that storefront was something else entirely. He was gone.

@RogerBW I've played it before, but we don't own it.

For chesslike games, I'm a Go player. The one we're most likely to play together is Hive (which we did back during H).

It's odd that we call it all cutlery when in fact only the knives are cutlery. The spoons are scooplery and the forks are stablery.

@catsalad When I turn off my car, the display asks, "Can the AC be used during charging? YES / NO." I always wonder, "Is this a quiz or are you asking for permission?"

"Everyone needs to touch the stove"

Happy to tell them it is hot. And how heat works. Ways to identify and avoid touching hot stoves.

But 99.99% of that will be ignored.

Until they touch the stove, scream in agony, and out of their own will and insight, re-stumble upon a thing that was said to them a dozen times. But now they are seeing it with fresh eyes.

Even then, they'll understand 20% and fill in the rest with some batshit theory of their own. Which is a vast improvement!

One of the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS your city could do to become more healthy, sustainable, livable, affordable, equitable, successful — stop pretending to “balance” transportation modes, and commit to PRIORITIZING walking/rolling, biking, public transit. HT @dublincycling’s graphic
