I consider myself a reasonably-intelligent person, and even decently-experienced with European norms, even if it was only living in Italy for two years some time ago. And after 20 minutes of study and even Internet searching, I could not figure out the purpose of this machine, much less how to use it. It is in a laundry room. It is almost AI-generated levels of bad.
Has anyone seen this organized anti-trans campaign? I've been seeing a bunch of posts with:
- An anime girl avatar
- A short, violently anti-trans message
- A huge list of unrelated hashtags (which is why I'm seeing them)
- A video
I block the instances as I see them, but that doesn't help much as each seems to come from a new instance.
What defense does Mastodon have against such an attack? The only tactic I can think of is pre-screening instances before federating with them, which would be a problem for all small instances.
learning that Ron DeSantis helped run the Guantanamo Bay prison makes his current actions and trajectory make so much more sense https://harpers.org/archive/2023/03/ron-desantis-force-feedings-guantanamo-bay-laughing/
In a happy coincidence, @weheartgames shared his new dice game E11even right at the start of our E weeks.
I liked the way the scoring mechanism ever so slightly handicaps people as they pull ahead. I was particularly pleased that, for my winning roll, I filled a 6 Straight without having to use any of my upgrades. Since dice usually hate me, this was a shocking twist ending!
Meet the woman behind early @NASA_Landsat images: Dr. Valerie L. Thomas.
A self-taught programmer, she managed the development of Landsat image processing. Her work in the '70s helped show that satellite imagery could be used to support agriculture. https://go.nasa.gov/3EJMPgT #BHM

I’ve taken to asking my coworkers if they feel like “search has gotten worse over the years” to my surprise most have said… no.
The only exception was the other CS teacher. How do your friends feel about how well search works? I feel like I used to know where everything was and someone rearranged my house— it’s not really my house of course but yeah.

#2743 Hand Dryers
I know hand dryers have their problems, but I think for fun we should keep egging Dyson on and see if we can get them to make one where the airflow breaks the speed of sound.

“The reason most public transportation is seen as ‘losing’ money is precisely because it charges for trips. If you don't charge fares, suddenly it can't ‘lose’ money. It just costs money, the same as the roads.”
This random comment has given me my new favourite argument for removing fares from public transit.
We have launched our Near and Far campaign! I'm playing Eyim, @peterdrake chose Kiku.
Remarkable about Broken Plains for me:
(1) I won for the first time, probably because I completed my very own trade route for the first time.
(2) When you have a big stack of gems, reputation is a good investment.
(3) If you find yourself with a big stack of various resources, go ahead and take 4 advanced artifact cards at the General Store. You'll probably be able to afford one immediately.
