This is illegal in C#:

short x = 1, y = 1;
short z = x + y;

1) Why?
2) Is the same true in C? Java?

Happy birthday to trailblazing American computer scientist Frances Elizabeth Allen (1932 – 2020) who made foundational contributions to optimizing compilers, optimizing programs and parallel computing. She was the first woman to become an IBM Fellow, where she worked from 1957 to 2002 and as an emeritus fellow afterwards. She was the first woman to win the Turing Prize.

@peterdrake won Nemesis in a raffle. I don't really like this style of game, but agreed to try it full co-op for N weeks.

Everything was going our way at first. The ship was already pointed to Earth. We found the Engine Control Room early and two of the engines were already functional. No intruders appeared until late in the game. We destroyed the Nest easily.

And then... intruders showed up in force, killed Peter, life support failed, and the ship blew up.

Where do the bad rainbows go?

Prism.

They get a light sentence.

It gives them time to reflect.

It's (asymptotically) done!

Please give it a try and tell us what's still confusing or broken.

(We're not looking for design ideas at this stage, but we might be when we start designing the third game in a matter of weeks.)

Well, it had to happen. Like that first scratch on a new car. A reader discovered a mistake in “Essential Go Proverbs” that’s also in the print edition.

On page 121, answer to problem 8, dia 2, the move at 10 doesn’t actually kill, as White can make two eyes by playing just to the right of 10. 6 should be at 8, forcing 7 to be played to the right of 7, then 8 at 6 kills.

Easy to update the digital version, but still waiting on John Power for the right fix.

Overheard from (I'm guessing) a high school student on campus for a tech camp: "I enjoy reading about the mafia on Wikipedia."

I tried to swipe type "whippersnapper" and my phone guessed "whitesnake".

#2797 Actual Progress

Slowly progressing from 'how do protons behave in relativistic collisions?' to 'what the heck are protons even doing when they're just sitting there?'

Me: Mastodon is the best. People are friendly, there's no manipulative algorithm, and it's full of interesting content.

Journalist: Amazing, the headline of my article will be "Mastodon is social media's new hope".

Me: Also, there are no ads.

Journalist: Interesting. Let's change that headline to "Mastodon is a toxic cesspool that is already dead".
