A large #earthquake anywhere in the world is a good reminder that Pacific Northwest residents should be prepared for our next one.
Have a plan for when shaking starts. On the coast, have a plan to escape #tsunami hazard zones and reunite with family in a safe place.
The weather is nice enough today that #Violet can go outside to watch the backyard show. The hummingbird at the feeder is minding its own business, but the squirrel on the fence is just messing with her.
I played Castell and CV today.
Castell is about the human tower builders of Catalonia. It has the most epic draw bag I've ever seen; you could fit a pair of shoes in there.
CV is in the same genre as Funny Friends: assemble the story of your life from various cards representing events, experiences, and achievements. CV's rules are somewhat simpler, but the cards in FF are funnier. A well-done game like this seems like it would be ripe for regular expansions adding new events or careers.
The power’s been out for almost 3 hours now and the kids are bored…
A cement truck crashed near Winganon, Oklahoma in the 1950s and the mixer was too heavy to move. It’s still there; locals have painted it to look like an abandoned NASA
capsule.

"under the proposed popular vote system candidates would likely focus their campaigns on dense population centers, buying ads in larger media markets, and making promises to the benefit of the states that have those large cities."
Candidates would, reasonably, campaign where there are more voters.
It's not true that a candidate could concentrate in a few large cities and win. Even if a candidate got every single vote in the 100 largest cities, they'd only get 1/6 of the vote.
You may be concerned that they would OVERconcentrate in large population centers -- say, spending 75% of their time in the 10 largest cities. Handily, there's a nice way to empirically test this idea: within a state, where all votes are equal, Presidential campaigns spread out their events in proportion to the population. I found the evidence in this video very compelling:

"The way it is now, candidates need to visit the smaller states during a campaign, which provides more fairness."
Empirically, they don't visit all the states now. They only visit swing states:
Setting aside speculation about what would happen, I believe the fundamental principle of democracy is that every vote is counted equally. Under a popular vote, that happens by definition. Under the Electoral College, it doesn't -- any candidate would happily trade a California or Oklahoma vote for a Florida or Ohio vote. Some votes are worth more than others, and that's wrong.

Right #Boardgames of Mastodon. I unexpectedly have a family-free afternoon tomorrow 😱 and if I order a new game within the next few hours it will be here by 1pm tomorrow.
So I need your recommendations for a game to keep me occupied for the afternoon (and possibly evening)
- Must be a solo game/ habe a solo mode
- Must be able to fill a few hours
- Beautiful artwork preferred
- Complex games are preferred
- Campaigns would be an area of interest
Games I already own in post below 👇🏼
I've had 5 COVID shots, the last one in October of 2022. (I'm over 18 and, as far as I know, haven't had COVID.) Reading this page, do you think the CDC recommends that I get another?

If making a planet more Earth-like is terraforming, and making it more Mars-like is areoforming, is making it more Venus-like aphroditeforming?

The National Popular Vote compact has passed house and senate committees in Minnesota!
https://www.nationalpopularvote.com/state/mn
If you live in Minnesota, please urge your legislators to pass the bill:
https://www.national-popular-vote.com/Campaign/MN/MN0
If Minnesota joins, we'll have 205/270 = 76% of the electoral votes required for the compact to take effect!
