Science education in an age of twitter disinformation

tl;dr — Science education needs to adapt to a world of misinformation on social media and beyond. Today, prominent antivaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tweeted the ridiculous claim that as director of the NIAID, Dr. Fauci bought the silence of the entire worldwide virology community by handing out research grants. Elon Musk then affirmed and amplified his claim.

Yeah, there's a similarity with Tesla, in that he relies on carbon trading and Federal subsidies. But those are way easier to get than NASA and aerospace contracts. The former have had the wheels greased by generations of lobbyists: the latter actually require some serious discipline. Which is probably why SpaceX is competent, Tesla is a mixed bag of competence and capricious fuckuppery and (his) Twitter is just the fuckuppery.

It's really cool that Twitter shuts down in stages over two months so that the Mastodon servers aren't overloaded all at once, very thoughtful of them!

#Mastodon: Strong legal warning from french digital minister to #ElonMusk, in response to new #Twitter policy launched Sunday

Second thoughts about firing Twitter legal counsel Elon?

@csilverman @Brklynmind @danielhep

Indeed. in a way I can't help but think of SpaceX: in order to work with NASA, the DoD, their equivalents in Europe and other countries, as well as communications and other aerospace companies, they need absolute compliance with very rigorous processes. Musk-capriciousness would have prevented SpaceX getting where it is and would destroy overnight. So he employs the extremely competent leaders this demands, and he stays out of their way. He's -- astonishingly -- actually intelligent and disciplined enough to do that.

@JonnElledge For now a link I put in my bio a few weeks ago still works. Takes you straight here, even, not via the "beware, hic sunt dracones" interstitial (though it did a few days ago). Obviously he's still dicking with it.

I notice nobody's registered strewth.social. (UK and AU readers will get it.)

I think I'm over my registering funny domains phase, so have at it somebody. Promise you'll actually put a site there; preferably a mastodon instance.

@parkermolloy Older links still work. I put a mastodon link in my twitter profile a few weeks ago.

A few days ago, clicking it began to result it in sending you via one of those facebook-style "you're leaving the safety of our site to someplace dark and evil" pages.

Now suddenly it's back to working normally... I wonder if they removed the interstitial page because they've implemented the block on inserting such links at all.

@BashStKid @SeanJones Back around 2012 I bought a new relatively high-performance car that had wide tires and poor soundproofing. As a consequence I got in the habit of listening to music from the 1930s because it was composed to be enjoyable on the poor, tinny reproduction they had in those days, so it still sounded good in a high noise environment.

@SeanJones When I was a kid they didn't play Tin Pan Alley music off of 78RPM records in supermarkets, but they're full of music that's the same age now as those would have been then.

@danielhep The hardest thing about joining mastodon is realizing you have to ignore everyone who tells you how hard and confusing it is. "Pick an instance to start" is the only unusual thing, and it's not hard. Otherwise it's no more complex than twitter. Rather less so in some ways.

@Brklynmind @danielhep And given the WSJ is essentially a Murdoch company I'm rather surprised. I'd have expected it to be rather more Musky in its leanings and sympathetic to his autocratic tendencies than most of the journalism industry.

@berndporr @ottocrat @GlasgowLovesEU That is to put it mildly an elaboration on your part of anything I've actually said. I said I don't miss a feature based on ways I've seen it used. However I did however say "most common use". That was indeed inexact. I'll change that to "the use that leaves the most overwhelming impression on me." I'm going to disengage now because you're obviously upset.

@berndporr @ottocrat @GlasgowLovesEU

Given that its most common use is to dunk on people, I find in practice I don't miss quote-tweeting. There's something very passive-aggressive about it a lot of the time. Also, i don't miss the tendency for high-follower accounts to use it in place of replying.

@Lorry Thankfully soon your Musk Neuralink will enable you to directly comprehend HTML and javascript without any external instrumentality. You will stand where the Krell stood at their great moment of triumph and tragedy.

@julienhoez I'd be fascinated to know what he thinks the second wrong is.

But only in a kind of an abnormal psychology sort of way.

@RobHadley @BylinesNetwork@bylines.social
This is why it seems absurd to me that people are moving to post. news. The only difference it offers is format; it's still opaque and private and came out of the same VC/techbro incubator universe as twiter. It's also got almost nothing in the way of an "about" page relating to policies.

It's like buying something in a stapled-shut brown paper bag because it has "not that other thing that went bad on you" sharpied on it.

"Our loss of access to Horizon Europe has reduced the funds available for UK science. Since Brexit, we’ve had far fewer postdoc applications from continental Europe. I still have very talented people in the lab; a lot of them are from China these days, very few from continental Europe. The way the UK government is currently conducting itself, and the fact we are now out of the EU, makes it more difficult for us to recruit top scientists. I very much hope even at this late hour, for the sake of the next generation of young UK researchers, that a way will be found for the UK to be part of Horizon Europe science funding."

@dannyman There's certainly no shortage of presumptive historical entitlement in their endlessly expanding proclamations bestowing human worth the way a British government bestows peerages.

But for a realistic look at how much past journalistic glory in a newsmagazine is worth, see Newsweek.
