Why does Amazon Prime video position the pause and skip controls right smack in the middle of the viewport and dim down the entire image so you can see them? How can you be in the business of streaming video and think it's your job to deliberately obscure it while people are trying to use it?

@LaReinaCroqueta@mstdn.social Sorry I should have made it clear I was teasing. I mean it does mean that in an ordinary context but I'm familiar with Mastodon.

@LaReinaCroqueta@mstdn.social Where I come from to boost a thing is to steal it.

@elizatech If you say no they register it in the International Directory Database instead.

@lolennui He already has. It's the very thing that keeps you from knowing that he has.

@hasmis That's kind of how I'm seeing it. The wider culture brings with it its culture war, its demands for power and attention, and its ever diminishing signal:noise ratio.

If you're an old Unix hand you certainly remember that usenet meme: "You're seeing this because you have proposed a technical solution to a social problem." Mastodon and the fediverse are a fine technical solution, one which even obviates one or two social, or at least socioeconomic problems. But the majority of them are immune to technical solutions, and they're boarding now.

Socially the "many eyeballs" effect will help; things that might fly with one moderator set will be deflected by others, and this might result in a somewhat better equilibrium being achieved. I don't really hope for more than that.

If this place becomes the new twitter, the world will probably be a slightly better place for it and it's something I hope to see..

But somewhat paradoxically, Mastodon itself will become a worse place than it was, in part because of a few inevitable twitterlike characteristics it is taking on that simply go with the territory.

@rahmstorf

If only Mormon founder Joseph Smith had been capable of the same feat

@smileybone Several of the Starbuckses in my area, despite being busy, have been shut down and boarded up, with the claim that they were "unsafe" for the employees. The truth is that they were "unsafe from union organizers".

@rubenbolling I think that's sorta true of SpaceX. He's -- surprisingly -- smart enough to understand that you don't get to work with NASA, the DoD,, their overseas equivalents, as well various telecommunications and fellow aerospace contractors, without following incredibly rigorous processes unfailingly and precisely. So for that company, at least, he hires extremely competent leadership and stays out of their way.

Twitter on the other hand he treats like a kid's clubhouse.

I find this site a lot quieter with media hidden by default, but it'd be nice to have a setting to exempt those you follow.

Twitter's visual noise wearied me, but If I didn't want to see your stuff I wouldn't be following you.

@mkleine As compensation goes, surely only free products are commensurate with free labor.

@TheTweetOfGod Thanks, I'll be blocking this tired one-joke follower-farming banality here as well.

@skiptomyloulou The old pleading guilty to a lesser crime trick. Oh oh silly me and my clumsy pop culture references I really must do better with those.

@rahmstorf Going to need the Viva Voce approach to verification. Before presenting, the teacher makes the student answer questions on the topic for about 20 minutes, without notes.

It’s happening. My son (14) tells me that one of his classmates suddenly realized in school this morning that he must give a presentation he should have prepared. He quickly got #ChatGPT to do it, presented the result in class and got the top mark.

@RobertMaguire If the part about raising money for a fake charity is true that's not just an ethics violation, it's criminal fraud with prison time.
