Given that for the foreseeable future an awful lot of conversations will be about the threat, real or imagined, of AI (also real or imagined), I think we're overdue for a HAL 9000 emoji, don't you?

Somebody get after whichever unicode committee handles this, pronto.

@Ruth_Mottram @ottocrat

In the US, politicians constantly claim they want to boost small business startups, innovation and entrepreneurship. But try pointing out to them that the need to get healthcare through your employer just about rules that out for countless millions of people.

When you get a quarter-billion pound coronation, do you have to sign some sort of agreement saying you won't drop dead for 10 years? Because it'd be such a ripoff to have to just do it again.

@pieist @annaghughes I just assumed that the boast was a shorter & more dangerous path was successful. Saving time on the smuggle

@mgarraha @sundogplanets Also people on trains would observe things like "time flies when you're going East"

@Holir_ @annaghughes There you are, you see? That sort of thing. People really need to let this go.

@sundogplanets @sundogplanets We could easily solve all this if we simply had 1440 time zones: 4 per degree of longitude, one per minute in the day.

@rubenbolling Nick The Lounge Singer's Star Wars cover had some real competition there.

@annaghughes Look, we know nothing about FTL.
Perhaps the Kessel Run was a challenge in distance optimization rather than speed.

@TheEconomist The four Canadian cities and the four highest rated cities in North America were, unsurprisingly, the same cities.

@EugeneMcParland My wife asked this question rhetorically yesterday: "if Russia is releasing criminals in return for serving in the war, aren't they risking a crime wave when those criminals are demobilized?"

I replied, "gosh, you'll never guess what's happening now..."

@RickGaehl At least they draw decency curtains around the part where they lube him.

@ChrisMayLA6

"The Post Office has spent £100m on City lawyers."

One wonders how many NHS doctors could get their pay raised with that.

@saustrup @mok0

Perhaps patrolling and monitoring the Baltic and Atlantic coasts of Europe should be a combined NATO operation. It seems like that would optimize the use of resources, improve intelligence sharing and response times, and not create inconsistencies and weak spots, nor limit a given patrol operation to territorial boundaries of a given country.

@fmhueffer @JamesGleick The man speaking is a former United States Attorney General. Under George W. Bush, naturally.

If you’re a Supreme Court Justice worried about endangering your “friendship” with a billionaire offering you a vacation and a trip on his private jet, can we assume you also won’t want to endanger your friendship by ruling against him? mstdn.social/@maxkennerly/1103

Still leaving the blue checks filtered out on twitter. You miss a bit but you get less annoyed. And it's fun inferring what the needy prats said from the responses they get.

@beebrookshire Their resemblance to Al Capp's Shmoo has been noted, and while the danger of the latter was more subtle it was also more chillingly existential. Still perhaps the Porg could be confined to a valley like the Shmoo were in Li'l Abner.
