@marcelias This whole business of letting Democrats breathe is getting a squinty-eyed scrutiny too, let me tell you.

@BashStKid Heh. You're so right! Those "good parties" that I know so much about because I TOTALLY get invited to them all the time! Nudge nudge know what I mean?

*weeps brokenly*

I really need to work on my irony. I've just had two people I thought fairly well of unfollow me because they thought I was serious.

@decembr14 And the other 70% are looking at their potholes and shuttered libraries and wondering why that £350M/wk still hasn't turned up.

Look, it may be technically renewable but that doesn't mean you should run your 4WD pickup on refined beef tallow, mmmmkay?

So the CW of the usual cohort of maniacs is that "Russell Brand was speaking truth to power so they have to tear him down." Now I'm scratching my head trying to work out what truths Jimmy Savile was speaking to power.

But did you see what Hungary was wearing in 1956? And those scandalous outfits on Poland in 1939! Honestly they were asking for it

@AnnemarieBridy Annoyingly, neither of them have a non-breaded version. If I'm going to buy synthechicken I want it for fajitas.

Don't make me buy Quorn, that stuff's made from a fungus no mammal ever evolved eating.

@AnnemarieBridy Despite the nose-biting owner, I prefer Beyond products because pea protein worries me less than soy, due to sourcing concerns. An awful lot of the soy we get comes from unsustainable practices.

@ottocrat How were you to know that that one, in all the bucket, was the important one?

Oh yeah? Well I'll see your hard data and raise you this vague impression that I'm under!

@harry @randahl And yet Ukraine is practically unique in that it's actually doing so. Globally the trend is in the other direction.

@randahl You don't have to listen to people like that for long before you find evidence they really haven't got anything against corruption -- it's just the usual case of making an accusation that the _listener_ is concerned about, not the speaker. (See also: Wagner fans accusing Ukraine of Nazihood.)

@koboldcurrychef I feel confident you already know about ST:TAS's "The Slaver Weapon", right?

@ianbetteridge @TimWardCam @corbin

Even back-of-the-envelope assessments are of some practical value here. Take this link from Forbes, for example:

forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/20

Even if it's off by 50% or more, someone who drives a little as I do -- per my odometer it's actually on the order of 3k miles per year, not 8k -- it's scarcely matters where in the range of say 20k vs 40k miles the breakeven point falls: I'll never reach either one. Not in any EV being made today: it'll be obsolete before I get there.

@muellerwhh @ianbetteridge @TimWardCam @corbin

Part of it is that manufacturers' range promises for EVs fall somewhere between "best-case" and "pure fantasy." But you don't need to be perfectly accurate. +-50% is useful, and certainly achievable.

@ktneely @dangillmor I miss it sometimes. To this day I remember the subject line of the thread that resulted in the fork of rec.arts.sf.written to get the torrent of Robert Jordan postings out of there.
