@david_megginson @simon_brooke
He had no idea what you were talking aboot, eh?
(Heh, sorry.) Yeah, I visited Gouda on a canal boating holiday and had that drilled into me.
Cheese counter people have no sense of humor anyway. I let slip when buying Gruyere that I was making enchiladas and he was scandalized because it's not a Mexican cheese. Look, I grew up just over the border with Mexico, if I want to get funky with my enchilada recipe, trust me, I know what I'm doing.

This is a big problem in the US. Once bought some "Asiago" made in Wisconsin. If Italy ever finds out about this garbage we'll be grateful not to be signatories to the ICC
How I would reform the Supreme Court
1. No lifetime appointments. Eight years and you move on
2. Increase the size to > 22 members, but only 11 sit on any given case.
3. President may only nominate from a pool of candidates selected by a committee consisting of the chancellor or provost or other designated faculty member of each of the country's top 30 or so law schools, plus a few members appointed by the National Bar Association.

I have an even weirder one relating to gunpowder, the Star Trek episode "Arena" and its author Fredric Brown
@johnelalamo @simon_brooke @david_megginson @kevinrns
It's very, very stupid.
At a small grocery in Portland's NW, bought a few things including a quarter pound of Caerphilly, then later wandered over to Thurman Street, went into the Public Library there, then into a used bookstore next door where I decided to buy a copy of Hugh Walpole's "Rogue Herries".
and it wasn't until I'd got home that I realized I had essentially reenacted the beginning of that sketch. That we even have a Public Library on Thurman Street and the tiny shop next door would have "Rogue Herries" is weird enough even without the cheese purchase.
@simon_brooke @david_megginson @kevinrns @johnelalamo
So much for my plan to eat my way through all the cheeses in the Python Cheeseshop Sketch, unless I go to the UK to do it...
(I have a weird coincidence tale to tell about that BTW)
@kevinrns @simon_brooke @johnelalamo
(I really only said this for the benefit of a Dutch colleague)
@kevinrns @simon_brooke @johnelalamo
All that win and then you had to bring up the cheese. The cheese does not commend them. The reason the Dutch cover their cheese with wax is because under EU law it has to include something edible.
@davidallengreen *I* should read him; his cartoons are wonderful, of course.
@davidallengreen For some value of "read"; they were cartoon collections.
@davidallengreen @DmitryOpines Curious, the first time I visited Australia I did a 3 day bushwalk (hike) starting in Katoomba, _and_ picked up a couple of Michael Leunig books in Sydney

@kaup I love that Amazon faithfully publishes all the "I don't know" answers in their product Q&A section. I mean seriously, we're supposed to have entered the age of AI and they can't filter those? I could do it with a 5 line perl script from the early 90s.
Once I was complaining about people who enter a question in a tech forum, various people try to help them, then they come back and say, "never mind, I figured it out". And never return to say what the problem was. And then you come upon that thread when you have the same problem...
... a friend replied "I found a way to stop people doing that."
@Ruth_Mottram @timkmak I can think of a few tens of millions of Ukrainians who'll be thrilled to learn Russia is 'over'.
@RollingStone Yeah, he's just dying for the discovery that this will entail. No help at all to the SDNY prosecutors there, no sirree
