@annaghughes Holy hell I actually know what you're talking about. That's about the last time I understood the world I was living in.

Can't say I understand why, but I'm glad the Chief AI Scientist at Meta is determined to convince everyone that the AI industry does not take trust and safety issues seriously and thus needs to be heavily regulated. 🤷‍♂️

@davidallengreen I suspect that when you have a famous father in the same field, people will always tend to imagine you as a young 'un.

I just told Stanley the cat that the entire reason the universe exists is to bring him into being.

He said "meow", which I'm pretty sure is cat for "well duh".

Author Martin Amis has passed away. Perhaps his greatest achievement was becoming a breakfast cereal mascot in 2007.

It's said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.

@gregeganSF Given it's a British paper I'd have expected them to use London buses. It's one of their few standards, along with Nelson's Column, height of, and Wales, area the size of.

@donelias In the US when i was a kid you could get big folding maps free at gas stations: state, region, adjacent states, whole country. you didn't even ask, you just walked in and took them off the display rack. It was worth it to them for the branding.

@SRLevine @Wolven

Something of a misconception there: relatively few cheeses use any kind of spoilage in the process; mostly it's just a matter of coagulating the proteins and binding the fats into the matrix, packing the result and then aging it. With some cheeses the rind is inoculated with a harmless mold to protect it from moisture and bacteria, and that can give the cheese a funky flavor but the mold doesn't really penetrate. Bleu cheeses and the like which have mold deliberately introduced are very much in the minority.

@AnnemarieBridy One prediction that seems to be coming true is in Neal Stephenson's "Anathem" -- which strictly speaking isn't futurist, it's more of a parallel Earth. But also in the future -- in which their internet-equivalent is overwhelmingly dominated by "bogons": dis- and mis- information generated by an ancient and ineradicable ecosystem of autonomous, at least semi-AI bots. The principal occupation of this world's IT class is filtering all this out.

I didn't quite buy it until recently, after learning that even without what we're pleased to call AI, approaching 50% of all internet traffic is bots.

@morgfair What makes this particularly crazy is that red states are overwhelmingly "taker" states; receiving more federal funding than they pay in federal taxes. It's their own constituents' heads the Republicans are holding a gun to.

@AnnemarieBridy Apple's an old hand at socialized costs and privatized profits. All the old Silicon Valley players are.

@rubenbolling

Which makes it all the more baffling that this conversation, from a rare video recording made in the court of their Catholic Majesties Isabella and Ferdinand, could take place almost two millennia later:

@ech Yes, that as well. But I'm thinking more about our sadly misplaced eagerness and optimism re: the "Arab Spring".

Scholz says that some countries see double standards in the West's defense of Ukraine. He's not taking into account differences in the sought or expected outcome.

The chance of Ukraine ending up ruled by a junta on victory seems as low as it was before the invasion. Chance of it ending up ruled by a totalitarian theocracy is essentially zero.

People act like it's always racism and nothing but racism that keeps us from intervening. Maybe that's an influence in some cases, I don't speak for anyone. All other things being equal that might be the reason. But other things mostly don't seem to be even remotely equal.

If there's something you're not supposed to tell anyone, be sure to say "I'm not supposed to tell anyone this" each and every time you tell anyone.

(Yes, I know people like this. We all know people like this.)

And this, today, to the BBC; he openly states its purpose and that Opposition accusations were correct, accusations he denied as a Government minister at the time.
