@rastinza They also want you to use it for your journal reviews, etc. From my point of view, whenever I hear the term "persistent identifier" alarm bells go off.

I know that my employer has put in place a system to automatically associate publications with me. I would say the publications it associates with me are easily 40% false positives. Much more work than it is worth. We used to give them our revised CVs each year. That was easy to handle. The new "labor saving" approach is opaque and annoying.

Yes. The government knows what I am doing. But, putting in place some sort of tracking cookie run by a shadowy organization just seems wrong. (I am using the word shadowy, because I spent abut 2 minutes trying to figure out who runs it and am confused.)

US federal government to mandate use of persistent tracking tool for all research work:

Does anyone else find this type of technology inherently invasive and a security problem just waiting to occur?

I remember trying to buy a TV that does not have "smart" functionality a few years ago. It was a chore. Today it seems nigh-impossible.

And not just TVs: ovens; refrigerators; dishwashers — all have "smart" options. In fact, it seems that more and more the available non-smart models are only the simpler ones, less performant in ways that are not related to any smart functionality missing.

My non-smart TV was available only with lower resolutions than "smart" models of the same brand.

As usual, it was said best by H. L. Mencken:

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard."

My view is that if constituents have to live with the results of the choices they make; maybe they will learn eventually.

I don't want the elderly to lose their livelihoods and healthcare. But if they elect representatives pushing those ideas, maybe they should experience the consequences of their votes for a while.

I think the ban is good. It will teach students to use VPNs, Tor, I2P and other essential self-protection mechanisms.

There is no better way to teach the youth of our country how counter-productive and useless Internet censorship is.

I support banning Tik-Tok in order to expose our hypocrisy.

I always thought the best thing to do would be to try to keep the government running as long as possible by cutting all federal spending in the districts where congress members voted against raising the debt ceiling. Instead post messages explaining that the local congressman (by name) voted against this service continuing.

I think that the following uproar from people getting mailings explaining that their congressman voted to repeal their social security would cause a lot of problems.

Closing down airports in those districts would also be felt.

I am also baffled that Democrats do not proclaim continuously that Republicans are working to repeal Social Security and Medicare.

I am surprised no one tried it.

Fascist? It has most of the characteristics of fascism. Except one generally thinks of fascists as somewhat competent.

Czarist? He does not seem to be working at setting up any sort of inheritance a la North Korea.

I guess I would go for kleptocracy, or maybe just thuggery.

This case should be investigated by journalists in Europe as well, not just in Russia.

It is potentially a disaster for all European attempts to bring Russian officials to account.
