Although, to be fair, the NRA is largely funded by German and Austrian gun manufacturers. It is not only that USA has bad laws, it is also that its politics is vulnerable to corruption.
As the US Supreme Court said "Money is speech."
@wellingtonrock I take a different view. LLM's tell you what they think you want to hear. They have no idea as to what reality is. They do not care about veracity. These companies have automated sycophancy, because that is their view of humanity. They think people exist to inflate their sorry egos.
Will this make real advances in science, technology, etc.? No. It just increases their pipe dream that they are giants.
There was a time (I would say ending in the 1990's) when tech was addressing real problems and making advances. At some point (tied to finance taking over the world economy), it just became money grubbing and devolved into a pile of excrement.

Mark Twain famously said, "It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled." Convincing someone that they have been fooled involves the admission that they made a foolish choice without the proper vetting. This can be especially difficult when masses of people and vast sums of money are involved.

A woman posted in a Facebook group that I am in that she is attaching her youngest child to the grocery cart with a carabiner, so nobody tries to kidnap her.
I pointed out that 90%+ of abductions are custody disputes and no one has ever stolen a child from a store in the US. It’s not how human trafficking works, and we should really be more concerned about things that are harming kids daily.
Within 5 minutes I was booted from the group.

@freemo @pj @DutyBard I know base rates. but gun ownership is highly skewed by party. The Republican/Democrat divide is pretty close. So, without doing the algebra, if gun ownership is highly skewed towards high crime areas....
The Venn diagram would have to be really weird for that to not be the case.

@thatguyoverthere @DutyBard @freemo @pj I never mentioned government. I am actually a bit more concerned about fear mongering and marketing guns for self defense. I think that is inciting people to carry guns around in a state of panic. I know when I was growing up the men in my family really looked down on pistols as being inaccurate guns and not very useful. The idea of carrying around hidden pistols would have not been seen favorably at all.
For example, you would not have road rage shootings if people were not driving around with pistols.

Stating the stats per capita would have been better and more effective.
I see comparing the death rates of say auto fatalities, diseases, and gun violence in the same regions eye opening. Since it is in the same geographic location, that gets rid of a lot of extraneous factors.
The declining life expectancy in the USA is shocking and worrisame.
