@taylorlorenz

You can copy a link to the toot and embed it in the content. Kind of clunky, but not too terrible.

Just spitballing here but maybe if you are CEO OF A LUXURY ELECTRIC VEHICLE COMPANY you shouldn’t buy one of the most powerful communications platforms in the world and use it to troll anyone to the left of Ron DeSantis

Lots of literature on optimizing decision tree structure to minimize the number of decisions needed for a given class of data.

@smellsofbikes @lauren

He will be forced to put in place a copyrighted material approach like Youtube. I think Youtube's cost about $60 Mil.

It is more a function of music/video moving from files to online streaming services.

Torrent clients now are easy to use. Software like popcorntime can hide the fact that they are built on top of torrents.

@nfgusedautoparts @lauren

Have actually been looking into this. Bit torrent's share of content pirating has fallen so low that RIAA/MPAA funded groups do not include them in their major pirating risks.

prsformusic.com/press/2020/usa

Streamripping sites are currently ascendant. Torrent might now be used more for legit sharing of data and that type of thing.

@lauren

Finally, a good use for MPAA and RIAA lawyers

Any thoughts on possible effects on this tech working poorly on women and dark skinned people?

I could imagine a class action suit in the works.

After the report about the Girl Scout mom getting booted from Radio City Music Hall, I spent the last two days reporting out the use of facial recognition technology by the Madison Square Garden empire to keep hundreds of lawyers that work for firms that have sued it from attending concerts, sporting events and shows. It is a radical use of the technology by a private company and I am truly shocked by how forthright MSG is about its real-world block list. nytimes.com/2022/12/22/nyregio

Just imagining this combined with the upcoming Supreme Court decision allowing businesses to discriminate against Gays.

How long will it be until businesses use this technology to ban people for looking Gay?

The bit about a lawyer being stopped from entering a music hall in the US because its facial recognition system picked up that she's part of a law company that's suing them is even crazier than I thought.

The law company isn't suing the music hall - it's suing a restaurant, in another state, which is owned by the hall's parent company MSG Entertainment. MSG gone ahead and harvested photos of all the lawyers in the firm and fed it to an image recognition system to ban them from every MSG Entertainment owned location.

People always tell me that if you've got nothing to hide then you've got nothing to fear. She's got nothing to hide and they still went after her.

If this doesn't start making people worried about facial recognition then there's serious trouble coming.

@howelloneill

I have always said they should consider people as a given and design for people. (Although, I like the alternative of destroying the human race and genetically engineering a new species capable of using your crappy web page.)

I am not worried about people clicking on links. I am worried about companies designing systems that ask users to click on links using connections that are easily hijacked.

And, honestly, why on Earth are passwords still a thing?

The success of Mastodon and the Fediverse is not the success of a new platform. It’s a potentially groundbreaking change for the internet. No traditional social media platform will be able to compete with this anymore once the network effects kick in here. And it’s looking very good at the moment.

@jilliancyork

With good reason

By the way, of late, I have been experiencing thoughtful conversations on this site as opposed to incessant trolling on Twitter. Is it the community or the lack of rage inducing algorithms?

I think you are the resident expert on the type of question.
