@neil we regularly declare "in our house, we award no points for presentation." My wife and I can both make things that taste good but end up misshapen or falling apart when we put it on a plate. Oh well, better than pretty food that tastes meh.

@dancinyogi the only way to learn to drive a stick, is to try to drive a stick. My dad took me to an empty church parking lot on a Saturday, and we just drove in loops forever. Start, stop, start again. You'll fail a lot, so a patient teacher helps.
