Hi to all Mastodon users. Slowly finding my feet. It's all a bit scary - like the first day of school!

Hello, new friends! I join the #Twitter exodus here. Here’s my #introduction.

I write #poetry and published my first #book this year.

I’m looking for communities talking about #neuroscience & the #brain, #disability, #chronicillness, #art, #writing, #historyofscience. Pretty much anything of interest in the #digitalhumanities. Glad to be here!

HelloOOooOOoOoooo How do i do this (this looks just like my very first tweet back in 2009)

A reminder for anyone new to mastodon who might not be happy with some of the racist and bad actors out there on other servers... Just import the fediblock list to your personal blocks and you will be safe from the vast majority of bad actors.

𝑺𝑻𝑶𝑹𝑴⛈️
I took all the domains from https://fediblock.neocities.org/ block list and put it in a csv file that can be imported so you can block all hateful ...

We're hiring for six positions on the editorial side of Scientific American right now: opinion editor, health editor, science reporter, copy editor, multimedia editor and engagement editor. The first five are listed and the sixth should be posted soon. You can see those openings plus some business and engineering jobs here. Thanks for considering these jobs yourself or recommending them to others! careers.springernature.com/sea

I’m used to existing in the mirror universe, so having an account there and an account here is no biggie. #TwitterRefugees

By the way, the economy is at least 50% more concentrated now than it was in 2005.

We desperately need stronger anti-trust enforcement to break up the monopoly power of corporations like Ticketmaster.

This Twitter fiasco is a reminder of who is *actually* critical to the survival of our economy & society.

Twitter worked before the billionaire got here. Now that workers are gone, Twitter is collapsing. Workers made Twitter work—a billionaire broke it.

Workers > Billionaires

@cra1g I'd be quite happy to see posts about sociology topics that are not political. What is up to you. The whole field is fascinating.

It's hard to stay away from politics, though. Since way back in the last century I've defined politics as "applied sociology with a dash of salesmanship." That said, a break from politics would be welcome.

Quick question to those who follow me on here: What do you hope I post?

The reason I ask is that on G+, I maintained about a dozen channels (topics), whereas on Twitter, it was mostly politics with some other topics every so often.

I kinda feel like taking a break from politics -- it's just exhausting -- but am curious what people are expecting here on Earth 2.

Okay shit is getting a little too crazy over at the other place.

@joshtpm Yes, I didn't spend much time there today. My feed is flooded now with unwanted garbage tweets from people I don't follow.

@karlauerbach Having dealth with both, more than once, yes, no comparison.

Dealing with the FTB is like trying to negotiate with a stupid animal that is also deaf. Work something out with them, everything settled and agreed. Six months later a new agent starts all over again and has no record of what was done before. Send them copies and they ignore them and keep proceeding. It's astonishing to watch them operate. It amazes me that wealthy folks in California haven't put the smash down on them long ago.

@Ary Hadn't really thought about it before, but yes, All Millennials take computers for granted. From the time they were 5 years old, computers were ubiquitous and something you could buy at Radio Shack. This was not true for my generation. Back in 1968, 69, when people learned I was programming computers their eyes would get big, "REALLY?" They envisioned a multi-million dollar machine in a huge glass-enclosed room (true) and me in a white coat (sometimes true). It was a whole different time.

@Ary Aha! Never heard the term Xennial. My eldest is on that cusp.

@jaz Android 11 here. Android 11 gives you very fine control over notifications. The controls in the app's settings is just a start. Go to your Android Settings / Apps and choose the Mastodon app and Notifications. There you should see a detailed breakdown of all the kinds of notifications Mastodon might generate (like 10). Each of those can be set as you like: the kind of notification, whether it makes a dot, what the notification sound is, whether it obeys the Mute or breaks through, etc. At least that's how it is on my phone.
