@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @PeeBeeJayBee @Ralph058 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 @LGsMom Yep or SAW filters. To me those are not electronic. Even though they might contain active preamps, they are passive electromechanical devices. Same with a quartz crystal. Passive.
But yeah, there are edge cases where one can quibble.
@opsnlops Yes, almost as if.
The Israeli army has continued its onslaught against resistance strongholds in the West Bank. It now has its sights set on Jenin, and is drowning it in a river of blood.

Yes, the definition isn't crystal clear, ahem. A crystal diode and cat whisker (or point-contact diode) would be an electronic device even though we didn't know how it worked.
@PeeBeeJayBee @ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @Ralph058 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 @LGsMom Haha. It is sort of a nit-picky distinction that's not crystal clear. (that's a little joke.) And the simplistic definitions we gave have some holes. For example, a magnetic amplifier amplifies but is not an electronic device, but electrical.
It's probably better to say an electronic device depends on an awareness of these things called electrons and that electrons are negatively charged. Or something like that.
Edison's experiments I mentioned elsewhere noted that the mysterious current that traveled through the vacuum was negatively charged.
@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @Ralph058 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 @LGsMom Yes, that's a good basic definition. Diodes and things that amplify are electronic. Inductors, caps, transformers, solenoids, motors, are not electronic devices but electrical devices.
It's not a distinction we often think about but it comes up on closer examination.

Nice radios. I ran a set of Drake twins when I lived in Guatemala.
@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @johnb48 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 @LGsMom Wow, that's a collector's item. You might want to restore it as a collector.
@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @johnb48 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 @LGsMom Yes, I understand that some VEs will test you using Zoom.
@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @johnb48 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 @LGsMom Yeah, Novice is gone, which makes sense now that the code requirement is gone. Back in the day, Novice was really all about getting a beginner on HF with 75 watts max and a short fuse (2 year license, not renewable) so they could get their feet wet, get their code speed up, and get a real license, which was the General. Tech was added and consisted of the General class written and 5 WPM code.
@ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @johnb48 @SrRochardBunson @sergio_101 @LGsMom With the code requirement gone, and with your smarts, I'm sure you can rip right through the tests. Just study up and find a VE that will let you take the General, pass it, and the Extra, in one sitting. Get it all overwith. I took all the tests and the 20 WPM code in one sitting. You can do it.

An LC resonator is passive and not considered an electronic device. An electronic device is considered one that works with electrons, a device that recognizes electrons as things. L's and C's were in use before anyone knew there was such a thing as an electron. It was just "the electric fluid".
The first electronic device was invented by Edison as a side effect of trying to determine why one end of the filament in his incandescent lamps, running on DC, would weaken faster than the other end. To try and understand it he added a third electrode and discovered that somehow not all the current traveled through the filament but some hopped out into the vacuum and traveled that way. He patented it but it came to nothing.
Then in 1904, Fleming created the first electron tube, a diode. This was the practical electronic device. Then Deforest created the triode, which amplified, and so on.
Inductors and capacitors are considered electrical devices and were recognized as components by Faraday, 75 years before the first electronic device came along.
@tf They won't be able to. There will be no ICE vehicles available for sale nor will there be gas stations to fuel them. By 2035, not a single person in the world will buy an ICE vehicle, even if they were available.
Is Wyoming not aware that companies like BMW have announced they will make their last ICE engine in 2025?
Is Wyoming not aware that the auto industry is driven, first, by what California drivers want? Are they not aware that companies like Ford sell more cars in China today than they do in the U.S.A.?
Hahahaha. This is a joke, right?
In 2022 the richest 1% bagged 2/3 of the world's new wealth, or $42 Trillion.
This is ridiculous, absurd, and clearly cannot continue. But what shall we do about it?
@billyjoebowers Hmm. I'm 70 but I think maybe I should have been born another 20 years earlier.
If a woman dressed like that today, she'd knock people out cold. If she walked down the street it would cause multi-car pileups.
@Ralph058 @SrRochardBunson @ClaraListensprechen@universeodon.com @sergio_101 @LGsMom I dunno about that modern tube stuff. That's for young people. Give me a good spark transmitter and a Branley coherer for reception. Rotary spark gap, LC resonator, done. Nice and simple. No electronics whatsoever. Just good old-time radio. Bzzt bzz bzz bzzt.
Of course, when I transmit, everyone in the Northeastern U.S.A. hears me on every frequency from 3 to 12 MHz, but hey, that's real radio.
;-)
Whew! Thank you all so much for the boosts, what an awesome community!
I'll take this opportunity to add clarification on some of my #CaptionTips:
2. The reason not to start with the words "image" or "picture" specifically is because the screen reader will announce it with those words, so it will sound like "image image of a cat." Not a big deal, just sounds a little odd. Instead, I suggest starting with the format (photograph, portrait, chart, Facebook screenshot, text, all of these are good!)
10. When a screen reader comes across a comma or period, it takes a little pause, to mimic natural speech. So just put commas and periods where you would naturally pause when speaking. And if you, like, use too many, it's better than not using enough. Capitalize after a period, then use caps sparingly. Capitals are read out letter by letter, so ask yourself if that's how you want them read.
@Cat_LeFey Very useful information. Thanks for posting.
New folks, just a reminder: continue to follow and unfollow people, curate that nice home timeline of yours. Be curious and open up profiles of everyone you see here — whether that’s from a boost or a reply from an existing follower to someone else. Good luck!
P.s. Keep posting about your day and thoughts like it’s 2007 and Twitter hasn’t yet taken off. Just vibe. We’re all here to chill. Mostly. Find your community, not an audience.
